Compufreek
I have recently rebuilt my top end in my 95 GP 3100 and I'm now getting alot of chatter out of the valve train. I tightened them to the correct torque spec and everything so I am stumped. The only things that are different are the new gasket kit and the fact that I shaved the heads down .015 to help raise the compression a little. Other than the noise everything else is running great. Anybody got any ideas?
PaPaPooh
well im not sure about this but what octane you running threw it? maybe trying a higher octane to see if it goes away? good luck
Compufreek
Well I did run 93 for the first time out but I'm now running 89. This didn't make any differnece it is not pinging it is definately valve train chatter, you can hear them all moving perfect but making a tapping noise...all of them. lilloon
when u had the heads shaved, did you also compenate by getting puchrods that are the same amount shorter? when you mill heads, and changed nothing else, the pushrods will effectivly be pushing farther up on the rocker arms which may not be able to handle that minimal difference. 4spdz34
its not pushrods. either the hydraulic lifter or the rocker arm would adjust that. it sound like your vavles aren't adjusted correctly
Compufreek
How do you adjust the valves? There is nothing but springs and retainers holding the valves to the springs.
Dan94Z34
The valves are not adjustable like a v8's. When you install the push rod and rocker arms, you torque the rocker nuts to 18lbs and thats it.
Compufreek
Yeah everything is torqued correctly and the pushrods are in the right place. I took the front valve cover off and ran the motor for a while trying to listen to where the noise is coming from but it really doesn't seem to be the valves, rocker, or pushrods. I think it may be a lifter, could that make it sound like a fricken sewing machine, LOL, cause that is what it sounds like.
89oldscutlass
Yes a collapsed lifter will make it sound like a sewing machine.
Compufreek
Well everything was fine before could the assembly grease or coilant/oil gel be clogging it? If that is the case would flushing the motor and running a slightly heavier oil in maybe help pump it up?
