jiggity76 Posted August 3, 2017 Report Posted August 3, 2017 91 Cutlass vert looking pretty sad. It's a 3.1 car and has black or dark grey leather interior. Pretty solid underneath though and interior is original except for the aftermarket cd player. UB3 cluster but I think it had the standard ac/heater controls. It's down the street from my mom's house in Dallas City, IL. Knocked on the door but no answer. I'll try again when I go home to see mama. Quote
Imp558 Posted August 3, 2017 Report Posted August 3, 2017 No shit Dude! Another Triple Black! I'm sure Jay will chime in with the stats, I got to spend a couple days with Chinese Matt's Triple Black at a meet in Toledo a couple years ago, absolutely stunning. Quote
jiggity76 Posted August 3, 2017 Author Report Posted August 3, 2017 If it's cheap, I'm thinking about seeing if it's for sale. I don't know much about verts but I think it's a good looking car. It would go nicely with my 91 International coupe! Quote
Imp558 Posted August 3, 2017 Report Posted August 3, 2017 I hope you get it, I wouldn't elude to the fact that it's on the rare side. Convertibles are a little like super powers though, they come with great responsibility. So many of the odds and ends are impossible to get. Galaxie500XL 1 Quote
jiggity76 Posted August 3, 2017 Author Report Posted August 3, 2017 My understanding is that any 91 vert is rare, maybe the 90 vert is super rare? I assume that the 92-94 vert parts are somewhat interchangeable with the 90-91 cars? It's sad but it seems like I've been seeing a lot of 94 verts in salvage yards lately so If they do interchange, maybe parts won't be so bad to find. In fact, I'm going to look at a 94 parts car vert this Saturday. I recently pulled a complete HUD system out of a 94 vert up in MN and last Monday, I pulled a 3.4 DOHC engine cover and factory CD player out of another 94 vert (posted pics of it under Junkyard thread, never ending). Last week, I found a red 92 vert with black leather and black top down in Des Moines, IA at the Wrench N Go. I haven't posted pics yet but will soon. Luke94vert 1 Quote
ManicMechanic Posted August 3, 2017 Report Posted August 3, 2017 1994 was the highest production year with 8638 made. 460 1990s and 1383 1991s were made. IF that car is a 1991 and the original top color, it's 1 of 7 made in Black/black/gray. Graphite interior was not available in 1991, just light gray, red and blue. Imp558 1 Quote

It's definitely a gray color interior. I'll try to get someone at the door next time I'm there which will be next week. Who knows, maybe I'll buy it. I'll try to get the VIN too. It looks like a 91 to me but maybe it's a 90? I don't know but hopefully the VIN will get some answers. Quote
sean1991olds Posted August 3, 2017 Report Posted August 3, 2017 Interesting! I think for the most part the interchange of parts would be 91-92-93 for some interior items, 90-91 for some of the body items, but I remember reading the 90s didn't have as much support structure as 91. Anyway the thing that makes me wonder if it is a 1990 is the tail lights, most 91's I see have black at the very bottom of the tail light. I see in the pic that the bottom of the tail light is chrome (strip). Not sure if that was a trim option or what. Also what the heck with that luggage rack my gawd lol. Quote

I didn't notice the tail light trim but was also wondering about the luggage rack. Is the rack factory then or did someone add it? All this time the car has sat here and I didn't even know it until recently. I usually go into/out of the east side of town when I visit mom and this car is located on the west side of town. That's how I found it, I decided to go west for some reason and couldn't believe my eyes! By the way, my 91 International has the black trim at the bottom of the tail lights so maybe your right, could be a 1990 model year car. Quote
sean1991olds Posted August 3, 2017 Report Posted August 3, 2017 I just poked around looking at 1990 convertibles, what I saw have the chrome strip at the bottom of the tail lights. 1991's so far as I see are black like this one https://www.mecum.com/lots/DA0915-222906/1991-oldsmobile-cutlass-convertible/ In the 1991 Oldsmobile Brochure though, the picture they use for the 1991 convertible DOES have a chrome strip at the bottom of the tail lights.. but maybe they used a pic of a 1990 for the 91 brochure figuring it looks the same body style wise. That Mecum car is absolutely gorgeous, holy cow! 500 miles is just crazy! Thanks for posting, I thought that low mileage cars were only reserved for really rare muscle cars so it's nice to see W body's getting babied and hardly driven. I'm really curious now to see if it's a 90 or 91. Quote

How much did that white/red 91 vert go for at Mecum? It says sold, but I don't see a selling price. Quote
sean1991olds Posted August 3, 2017 Report Posted August 3, 2017 Would you believe... drum roll.... $16,000.00 have to log in to see that. How much did that white/red 91 vert go for at Mecum? It says sold, but I don't see a selling price. Quote

FYI, the 88 vert I was looking at about a year ago had very low miles (of course) and they were asking around $14k. Quote

ManicMechanic Posted August 4, 2017 Report Posted August 4, 2017 Black or Dark Teal with a white interior are two of the best combos ever. Quote
jiggity76 Posted August 4, 2017 Author Report Posted August 4, 2017 I'm actually visiting my mom tomorrow so I'm going to look at it again and hopefully talk to the owner. Not sure if it's even for sale but you never know. I will get the VIN too and hopefully Manic can pull some info on it if he doesn't mind. sean1991olds 1 Quote
jiggity76 Posted August 5, 2017 Author Report Posted August 5, 2017 Well I talked to the owner today and sadly it's not for sale. He's not ready to let her go but I gave him mine and my mom's info if he changes his mind. He also has a 94 vert in the same color combo with the DOHC motor, quad leather seats but no HUD. The 94 only has 116,000 on it and enjoys it quite a bit. It is a 1990 model year guys so good call to sean1991olds who spotted the correct year. Make me want it even more since it's a 90. Manic, if you could work your magic again with these VIN# pics, thank you. What's that weird symbol between the 4 and the D? Looked underneath it today too and no serious rust issues, pretty solid car overall metal wise. Quote
sean1991olds Posted August 5, 2017 Report Posted August 5, 2017 That character is the letter L, which per a GM Vin decoder, indicates that it's a 1990 indeed! Crazy.. had a strong hunch.. what a rare machine! Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk Quote
ManicMechanic Posted August 5, 2017 Report Posted August 5, 2017 Indeed a 1990. As I recall, a fairly late 1990. Convertible production started in the last few of months of the model year. Not AS rare but still 1 of 460 made. It was originally white though so it's 1 of 24..Factory CD and SWRC car though. 1G3WT34T4LD407291 Vehicle: CUTLASS 2 DR Year: 1990 Build Date: Unk. jiggity76 Posted August 5, 2017 Author Report Posted August 5, 2017 Thanks so much Manic! Don't know how you do it! I still like the car but kind of bummed out that it was originally white, had no idea and really like the black. 1 of 24 is still impressive. Is it bad that it has ABS? Guys on this forum said that's a big problem as parts are hard to find or repair. Surprised to find that it was a factory CD player car, didn't know that was even a option that early. To be continued... hopefully he gives me a call someday. Wish the car wasn't outside getting shitty but it is what it is. Quote
sean1991olds Posted August 6, 2017 Report Posted August 6, 2017 FYI, that Mecum auction 1991 Cutlass Convertible sold in 2015 with 500 miles for $16K, it sold before that in 2009 with 246 miles for $17,250. I would've paid $16k all day for that car. It's beautiful. FYI, the 88 vert I was looking at about a year ago had very low miles (of course) and they were asking around $14k. Quote
