Grandprix1 Posted May 18, 2017 Report Posted May 18, 2017 So I'm interested in replacing my stock head unit with a nice touch screen one. Not one of the small ones cause I don't like how they look. I haven't been able to find a dash kit for one that size only the small ones. Any ideas? It does not have bose. Quote
Imp558 Posted May 18, 2017 Report Posted May 18, 2017 Check Crutchfield, they have a fitment guide that will tell you what will and won't work. Quote
Grandprix1 Posted May 18, 2017 Author Report Posted May 18, 2017 So it looks like I can't do a double DIN so it would have to be a single DIN. Looks like you can do it for less then $100. My concern is look as well as if my steering wheels controls will still work. It is a MUST that those work. I love those to death Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
94 olds vert Posted May 18, 2017 Report Posted May 18, 2017 Not sure if you want to go this route. This is a factory radio with an AUX plug. The steering wheel controls will work, and it has that factory look still. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Grand-Prix-Bonneville-1996-03-Radio-AM-FM-CD-Player-w-Aux-Input-16265532-/152354744608?fits=Model%3AGrand+Prix&hash=item23790ce920:g:RRoAAOSwo4pYUCY2&vxp=mtr Grandprix1 1 Quote

They are so expensive though Quote
digitaloutsider Posted May 18, 2017 Report Posted May 18, 2017 It would be a cold day in hell that I ever pay nearly $200 for a factory radio with an aux in. Figure out what pins inside control the input to the amplifier and wire one in yourself. Contact Double D Mods and see if they still have 2 DIN dash kits for the 97-03s. They're not listed on the site, but they used to make them: http://shopddmods-com.3dcartstores.com/ PERSONALLY, I'd buy a good 1 DIN head unit and this dash kit: http://maptechenterprises.com/storefront/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_5_6&products_id=7 White93z34, Imp558 and Nas Escobar 3 Quote

What Single DIN radio do you recommend? I was looking at a kenwood. I want to be able to connect it to my steering wheel controls as well Quote
Imp558 Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 (edited) Looks like your dash is 1.5 Din not double. Crutchfield has 113 single dins that fit your car, 12 with in dash video, 3 that do GPS navigation. The prices are fair to a little above fair there, what makes them cool is when you start adding things on there are discounts. It's cheaper to get the deck, dash kit, steering wheel control adapter, and wiring harness as a bundle than likely anywhere else sourcing the parts individually. Edited May 19, 2017 by Imp558 Quote
Nas Escobar Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 Honestly, if you had your heart set on a screen, they sell flipouts (still). Here's a bargain basement one. Jensen is more higher tiered compared to other brands like Boss or Soundstream. https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_93747_Jensen-VX3012.html And if you don't feel comfortable with Jensen, here's a Pioneer. https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_105647_Pioneer-AVH-X6800DVD.html I personally would buy the Clarion. https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_65930_Clarion-NZ503.html It has GPS installed as well. I know it's redundant with the fact that your phone does the same thing, but I personally think it's convenient. https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_65930_Clarion-NZ503.html They sell a $400 version one without the GPS and one more Jensen with GPS https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_93752_Jensen-VX7012.html Quote
digitaloutsider Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 god i hate flipout HUs. yuckopinion> I do like that dash kit and if I decide to do this that's what I'll use. What Single DIN radio do you recommend? I was looking at a kenwood. I want to be able to connect it to my steering wheel controls as well I had a 1 DIN Sony in my Tbird that I loved. BT, SiriusXM compatible, etc. etc. It was the MEX-N5000BT. That has since been superseded by the MEX-N5100BT, but it doesn't look as pretty, I think. I use the PAC SWI-CP5 for steering wheel controls in my car. I'd go with Sony, Alpine, or Kenwood. You get what you pay for with headunits, and I would never put a no-name janky HU in my car. Not worth the headache. Quote
White93z34 Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 I'd modify a factory HU for Aux in for half that! primergray, digitaloutsider and Psych0matt 3 Quote
Imp558 Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 Nobody likes an off brand, that's true. 3 years ago my kids got me a Dual from Walmart, a $50 deck and I figured I'd run it a couple years so they could see me using it. That thing does everything right and the menu system is great, the only thing I don't like is the blue color. As of now I have absolutely no aspirations to replace it. I got a very nice Sony for her car and honestly hate using it. It's laid out poorly and I have to stop and look at it to do anything where my Dual has very distinct physical features when I touch it without looking down. Quote
Nas Escobar Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 <my opinion>god i hate flipout HUs. yuck</my opinion> Funny thing is that I would run one if it wasn't for the fact that none of my cars are laid out for something like that. All my cars would cover the vents if I had a flip out. I don't mind a non screen radio but maybe one day I'll mod a dash for 2DIN. Quote
Daermos Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 This is something I have thought of doing iny Grand Prix. There are alot of videos out there of people doing this. I have not done this yet because we'll have not found a double din deck that says buy me. I may do this if I can find a decent one or an Android stereo. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk Quote
KnightOwl Posted December 15, 2017 Report Posted December 15, 2017 I was looking online last night and found single din units from Boss that used a touch screen face flipping down vs up, which is my biggest gripe with a flip out because it blocks the a/c vents. I definitely like the filler plate digitaloutsider posted the link for...that looks great. Quote

On the surface they look about the same price as everyone else but if you bundle stuff together it ends up pretty cheap (steering wheel interface, antenna adapter, install kit, wiring harness adapter). Bronco Boy Posted December 17, 2017 Report Posted December 17, 2017 I haven't done a double din, but it has been in the back of my head for many years. http://www.doubledmods.com/makes the bezel, and not sure what install kit would be needed. Anybody that has done a write-up on this topic either does a crappy job, or doesn't provide any detail. Quote
KnightOwl Posted February 6, 2018 Report Posted February 6, 2018 I've noticed a few single din model with a 3.5 screen. It just seems weird no one offers the 1.5 din with so many GM and Mopar cars that use them. Quote
Grandprix1 Posted February 6, 2018 Author Report Posted February 6, 2018 God this threads still around? I haven’t done anything. Just left the stock radio. Looks better to me. wstefan20 1 Quote
KnightOwl Posted February 7, 2018 Report Posted February 7, 2018 I found this on eBay... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Reverse-Camera-1Din-Car-Radio-Stereo-GPS-DVD-CD-Player-Canbus-for-Jeep-Wrangler/322252247788?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160727114228%26meid%3D0c20c9ce8c9d4682a89582afdda5ec97%26pid%3D100290%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D322252247788%26itm%3D322252247788&_trksid=p2060778.c100290.m3507 (Sorry about the huge link, my work PC wont give me all access) I measured the dash space vs the radio size and its really close. Radio 3.7x8.0/ dash 3.5x 7.75. I'm going to check with my guy at Audio Express and see if this is compatible. I don't know why not. Quote
Nas Escobar Posted February 7, 2018 Report Posted February 7, 2018 I would like to put that in my Camaro. Quote
wstefan20 Posted February 7, 2018 Report Posted February 7, 2018 That looks awesome! Only thing I couldn't live without though is the head up display not displaying radio stations. Course, I might not use this as much with a better radio... lol Quote
KnightOwl Posted February 7, 2018 Report Posted February 7, 2018 I think I'll swing by the salvage yard and grab another dash panel that I can work on the hole (In case I screw it up) This is the best looking possibility I've run across. The radio also has a 60 day return window so if I cant make the dash panel work I'm not over the barrel for the money. wstefan20 1 Quote
KnightOwl Posted February 13, 2018 Report Posted February 13, 2018 A few minutes with a pro always brings a wealth of information... I stopped by Audio Express today and was enlightened by the manager/head installer. I trust these guys to the bone because they have done 3 installs on 3 different cars I've owned and each time the result has been amazing. I showed him the eBay unit I posted previously and he immediately replied "Thats not gonna fit." I asked him why and he immediately segwayed to "What are we trying to do?" As soon as I mentioned my discontent about finding an appealing single-din unit for the car, he replied frankly that it could easily be done if I was willing to make some sacrifices. Such as? He says there are more than a few double-din units on the market with 6.1 screens...this gets closest to the dash hole size. The dash face is not as big a problem as mounting the unit in the dash frame itself, which in turn dictates the face position. If you are willing to ditch CD/DVD drives and go with digital media, the overall size and depth of the unit takes a big drop, allowing more room to work with. Usually by ditching the disc drive you also throw out motorized face, but some units still use them for security and detachment...this also has to be given up. So 6.1 max, no CD/DVD, and no motorized gizmos. I can live with that! So I will be taking the car down there next week to sort out some choices and prices. Further info will be coming. wstefan20 1 Quote
