oldparts Posted February 27, 2017 Report Posted February 27, 2017 I saw on wikipedia for the 60 degree MFI 3.1 liter engines can use e85 and Methanol....anyone run it and how did it act? Quote
Dark Ride Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 Unless you're running a turbo 3.1 I don't know what the point would be anyway, it would be a lot of work. I think it has been done on a tgp, iirc. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 You cannot run E85 without a tune. Quote
RobertISaar Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 there were 1st gen luminas with 3.1s that were capable of running on methanol, but I've never actually seen one. I'd love to grab the PCM/calibration from one just for the rarity of it. I don't think they even received any extra sensors to determine fuel type being used. Quote
Nas Escobar Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 Those were experimental cars anyways that were sold to fleet. The Chevy Cavalier had a CNG option as well, but that doesn't mean that the OHV122 is able to run on CNG and gasoline, petrol, or what have you. These are the exceptions and not the case. Off topic, I've seen a CNG Cavalier at a self serve yard and they are modified for the feature. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted March 2, 2017 Report Posted March 2, 2017 Could make more power with E-85 in a TGP, if tuned for it. Other than that , no point really. I wish we had E-85 here...... Quote
Schurkey Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 There are two reasons to use E85: 1. You can distill your own fuel from biomass in such a way that it's economically attractive compared to buying gasoline like everyone else. 2. Your engine has a shitload of compression ratio and extensive modifications. E85 allows you to make heaps of horsepower without detonation just like race gasoline, but E85 costs less, is more emissions-testing friendly, and doesn't require as heroic a cooling system. Ordinary street-driven cars and typical owners don't fall into either scenario. Quote
Imp558 Posted March 6, 2017 Report Posted March 6, 2017 I remember back in the early 90's when they tried E-gas here and it was killing brand new engines. For some reason the valve guides come to mind. I know that was the issue when we went to unleaded, my old 310 Wildcat was a leaded fuel engine. Quote
