How many miles on the tranny? Any other problems?

Have you checked the fluid status / level? Color? Smell?

If the fluid is low / burned, that could be your main problem.

If not, most likely it's something internal like a clutch pack or something to that effect.

well the car has 106,000 on her all highway and its due for a tranny fluid change you think that could be it. idont see how that would make it shift hard only in one gear unless maybe it has somthin to do with pressure with old fluid.

Yeah, in seeing many customers cars with transmission problems, over 80% are fluid based.

Do a Torque Flush or a Pan Drop depending on how your fluid looks / smells and go from there.

my 3100 shifts funny from 1st to 2nd but shifts short and firm all other gears is this normal for this tranny?

sk8...I have a'95 Cutlass and know exactly how you feel. Mine has shifted funny between those gears so I dropped my pan last week and changed the filter including whatever fluid was in there. I haven't driven my car that much since, but noticed that it has a slightly smoother shift. I guess it takes some miles for it to show a 100% difference.

I suggest to at least drop the pan and change the filter. You will need about 6 quarts of fluid (don't overfill so check your tranny dipstick) and if the initial gasket is still inside the pan it is reusable. Check it over 1st for tears or cracked areas...redfox told me that its the best gasket for that tranny(4t60-E). You can always take it to Valvoline or a place like that if you have the $$$ for them to do it!
