avhman
From the great advice I got from my last post, I figured I would ask you guys when you think these problems might be. Just recently,(like the past two weeks) When I stop my car and throw it in park the rpm's climb. Say its at 1000 it will go up between 1500 - 2500. Other times it will drop and te engine feels like its gonna die. ( My brother thinks it has something to do with the Idle speed) Even today, while leaving from a red light, the car seems to have no power, Ill gas and it will go, but it seems to not to, so I punched it, and nothing. Then after a few seconds of it hesitating it will start moving, but not with the power it use to have. The Oil Pressure gauge seems to drop sometimes too, I dont have a leak, cause the driveway isn't oily. Any advice guys? - Thanks! CJ
Redfox340
Would check the following to start off with: * any Service Engine Light codes? * clean Throttle Body along with the Idle Pintle Valve; after cleaning preform Idle Re-Learn Procedure. * perhaps check EGR valve and records when the Oxygen Sensor (O2S) was replaced. Start with these and other suggestions from the STE / TGP owners. - Erik
idbeast
Bad plugs and/or wires... the O2 sensor is causing idle change to compensate for the poor driveability issues
avhman
Thanks guys, Another question. Where the hell is the PCV hose at? I can't find it I can't find the back Valve cover, do i need to remove something? ahh I hate when my baby is sick
R Dubya
Did you replace the x-over pipe? I would start with a new o2 sensor and also check for possible vacuum leaks. The PCV valve is on the rear valve cover, it's hard to get to unless you have broomsticks for arms. Try rolling the motor forward with the dogbones off. The PCV is in the valve cover, but the hose for it runs under the plenum, so be careful, or you'll wiggle it off and then have to dive under the plenum to reattach it. 95GTP
RPM flux might be bad plenum/intake seals. Run the motor and spray intake cleaner around the mating surfaces, if engine revs up ya got a leak. I have a 3.4 and that is a tried and true fix for RPM flux. idbeast
Here is a picture, be careful pulling the PCV out of the hose because if you pull the line off the fitting you almost need to pull the pendelum to put it back on. http://www.turbograndprix.com/boostgauge/vacsource2.jpg trust me do your plugs and wires first... RareGMFan
Speaking of plugs and wires......I was under the TSTE hood yesterday and was wondering......if the wires themselves literally show the numbers 1-6 on them in white, does that mean they're the originals? Or do some aftermarket companies do this as well? idbeast
If they have the numbers on them, they are GM either original or replacement
RareGMFan
In the great words of Chris Farley, "HOLY SHNIKES!!" Damn it, I still haven't had a chance to change those since I got the car. That and spark plugs. I want all performance parts for this car, but I know you gotta be a little more carefull with the turbo motors. What should I go with for plugs and wires? god910
I went w/ stock replacement Delco plugs. I'm using the Accel 8.8 wires. I bought the cut to length sort of the V-8 persuasion. If you have the ICM in the stock location the #1 wire will be a little short. (But it still reaches) if they are relocated you won't have any problems. (Depending on location obviously, but between the dogbones is fine.)
idbeast
Jeff m and I have had long discussions on the plug wire issues, jeff has told me that the stock GM wires are surprisingly the best.
god910
I can tell you this much. I had my 72 Buick LeSabre on a sillyscope w/ a set of Accel SuperStock 7mm Spiral core wires, and then w/ a set of Delco 7mm wires. Both bought from Advance Auto parts. The Accel's were ~$40 and the Delco's were $35. The Delco's gave a higher peak voltage, and a smoother discharge overall. That is one of Accel's lowest lines of plug wires, but as they are more expensive, you would expect more. I put the A/C's back on and never looked back. But hey, there's gotta be something to these Accel's or so many people would be using them right? (Everyone's distributor o-ring leaks, so it's gotta be okay right?) I also love how people are quick to buy a High Performance coil. It's good to 45,000 volts. Well, I have with my own eyes, seen a GM stock HEI coil go over 60,000 (I couldn't tell how far over, but it was a couple K at least.) So, you can keep your coils. BTW, I'm getting the Accel high tower coils because they are yellow. Why do you think I got the 8.8's? Duh... They're yellow. (It adds to my 4220 whp)
Chris A
Nice to see some empirical data to spread some light on the wire and coil debate!
RareGMFan
Actually, I was thinking MSD for coils and wires (8.8 ). I know a lot of people use Accels, but I've heard nothing but complaints about them as a brand, quality wise. I'm planning on getting a full make over done on the car next weekend. Now if only I could find a cheap fix for the cross-over. $400+ for a Jeff M pipe is a bit steep for me at the moment, especially since I need TWO of them!
