Guest Eurolumina92 Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 i want to put a turbo on my lumina but i want to know is it possible to use a manual boost control on thatset up or no ????????????????????????????????????????????????? Quote
sonyman87 Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 Look up some Expensive BOVs i have heard some can be ajusted electronicly or manualy Quote
90lum31v6euro Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 a manual bost controller (MBC) is designed to control the wastegate, not the BOV, when the level of set boost is asertained, the wastegate opens and reroutes the exhaust gasses around the turbine so overboost does not occur. a BOV just vents all boost when the throttle plate is closed so u dont get compressor surge, and a possible blown turbo. boostnawd Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 a bov has nothing to do with boost control. an MBC is a pretty simple device. they come in two basic types, a ball & spring style and a bleeder valve style. they both achieve the same thing through different means. first, we need to understand how a wastegate actuator works. it works by opening the wastegate of a turbo when it senses the turbo is putting out an 'x' amount of pressure. it works on vacuum (or boost in this case), you have a vaccum hose running from a boost source to the actuator. the amount of pressure or 'x' before the actuator opens is determined by the stiffness of a spring inside the actuator. mbcs are installed between the pressure source (usually on the outlet elbow of the turbo, or sometimes from the bov) and the actuator. a bleeder style mbc works by 'bleeding off' some of this pressure before it reaches the actuator. so, let's say the spring in your actuator is rated at 9psi, you set the bleeder valve to let out 3psi of pressure, the wastegate actuator will now open at 12psi because in order for the spring in the actuator to see 9psi, the turbo has to put out 12psi of pressure. a ball & spring style mbc works by not allowing the actuator to see ANY pressure until a preset amount. basically you can adjust the amount of pressure required before the mbc will allow any air through it to the actuator by tightening or loosening the spring inside the mbc. ball & spring are preffered by most, as they reduce the amount of boost spikes and are generally more reliable. an MBC will NOT allow you to lower the amount psi before the actuator opens. so if the spring in your wastegate actuator is rated at 9psi, you cannot make it open at 7psi. you can only go up. so to answer your question.. hell yea, but you can't reduce. sonyman87 Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Yeah thats what i ment im still dumb when it comes to turbo Quote
