95greenSE Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 So was planing on changing my thermostat sometime this week, and thought that maybe I should change the intake gaskets as well just by the way where the thermostat is located on these motors, so I go on rock auto to look up gaskets....their are two designs on these motors, one is with the push rod guides and roller rockers, the other is without push rod guides and ball and socket rockers, did they make 2 different style of the valve trains on these engines? Or do the multiport 3.1 use 1 style while the SFI uses the other? Don't want to order the gaskets yet and don't want to really tear it all down to figure out witch one it is and be a vehicle down Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
RobertISaar Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 the earliest 3100s use a ball-pivot rocker, most/all 96+ 3100s use rollers. a quick look through the oil filler cap will show which. another potential hangup with the LIM gaskets, some sets are.... odd. I bought a Dorman 615206 kit, which specifies 1st design rockers(it has no pushrod guide built into the LIM gasket), but it's also meant for a large port manifold set.... which in theory, should only have ever happened on a 96 u-van, even then it may have never occurred. includes 96+ EGR gasket as well. also, while you have it apart, if you haven't changed out the dizzy dummy plug o-ring for the upgraded brown version, that would be a great time to do so. some of the LIM gasket kits come with one, others don't. 95greenSE Posted November 30, 2015 Author Report Posted November 30, 2015 I really can't tell, but I did a little more looking around on rock auto and they got a gasket set with both styles, even Felpro for 60 bucks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
RobertISaar Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 pretty sure i see ball/pivot style rockers. http://wot-tech.com/smallport/nonroller.jpg http://wot-tech.com/smallport/rollerrocker.jpg you can probably get a better look at the fulcrum than what can be photographed, but the difference is pretty obvious. 95greenSE Posted December 5, 2015 Author Report Posted December 5, 2015 Boy this intake gasket is "real" fun, took a stab and order the set for the ball and pivot rockers, and good thing I guessed right, now the fun continues tomorrow Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk rich_e777 1 Quote
rich_e777 Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 You got like 8 more bolts to pull the lower manifold off, I`d unbolt to P/S pump as well to get it out of the way too, you`ll like having the space. Wait have you drained the coolant yet? Your bypass port looks full. Quote
RobertISaar Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 speaking from experience, that front and rear drain plugs are going to fight on the way out. Quote
95greenSE Posted December 7, 2015 Author Report Posted December 7, 2015 I drained some of the coolant down before I took the lower off, I did removed the alternator and p/s pump, I also thought that the valve train was set up the the v8's and I now have to remove the rockers and push rods to get the gaskets off, torque wrench is on order, just waiting on that now, Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
rich_e777 Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 Torque wrench is a must, did you get new manifold bolts as well? When I did them on my Cutlass I just pulled the lower hose off the water pump and let the coolant drain that way and it brought the level down enough to pull heads off. Hey you might want to clean out your lifters while you have your engine apart. A magnet tool pulls them right out. Quote
95greenSE Posted December 7, 2015 Author Report Posted December 7, 2015 Torque wrench is a must, did you get new manifold bolts as well? No I didn't get new bolts, I know I'm sposed to replace them but the car has 202xxx on it and just being used for winter right now, but I notice that someone had done the gaskets before, their was anti seize on all the bolts Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
95greenSE Posted December 7, 2015 Author Report Posted December 7, 2015 I would say the old gaskets were shot, the first two pictures are from the rear cylinder heads, and the third one is with the new gaskets Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
RobertISaar Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 .... LIM bolts need threadlocker, not antiseize.... with how light of a torque they are, antiseize can allow them to loosen up and cause leaks/LIM gasket failure. Quote
95greenSE Posted December 8, 2015 Author Report Posted December 8, 2015 .... with how light of a torque they are, antiseize can allow them to loosen up and cause leaks/LIM gasket failure.Chiton said to torque to 110 ft lbs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
RobertISaar Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 the spec for the LIM bolts is 115 in-lbs, which is about 9.5 ft-lbs. if you follow the later procedure, all 8 are tightened in order to 62 in-lbs, then the center 4 are set to 115 in-lbs while the outer 4 are set to 18 ft-lbs(216 in-lbs). 95greenSE Posted December 9, 2015 Author Report Posted December 9, 2015 Well I'm please to report, the car has heat now, on the other hand, found out my cooling fans don't work, and a check engine light is on.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
