95greenSE Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 2 hrs trying to get the rear rims off and can't, why did gm put lug nut keys on these w body's??? Or why did the original owner had them installed??? Anyways I tried just about everything to get them off, any idea how? I don't really want to go to the dealer to get a key order and spend cash out my a$$ just to have them replaced... I'm stump..... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
55trucker Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 I gather that you've got yourself into a fight with these....... GM put them on all of their vehicles equipped with alloy wheels. Quote
ManicMechanic Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 Not all, no. They were optional for a few years then dropped. Most are aftermarket or a dealer accessory. Quote

55trucker Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 Not all, no. They were optional for a few years then dropped. Most are aftermarket or a dealer accessory. Well, I was referring to the vehicle platforms of that era... Quote
55trucker Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 I've read elsewhere that a good quality 20mm 12 point deep socket will drive on and catch the keyed lug nut and turn them out, personally never has this issue as I've never lost the keyed socket. Quote
95greenSE Posted November 18, 2015 Author Report Posted November 18, 2015 I've tried that, didn't work, tried multiple sockets and still nothin, the lug nut is now striped before I realize it was a keyed nut, I thought that it was seized, and j didn't get the key when I got to car about a month ago. Imp558 Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 That's what I do, hammer an impact socket on. They are only supposed to be 100ft lbs Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 When I got my GTP, one wheel had one. I ended up drilling out the center of the lug and then just putting in a new lug Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 Last time I had one stuck, I went to a tire store. Best ten bucks I'd spent in awhile. Quote
Imp558 Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 I got all 4 of my places because I was first to defeat the locks in the wrecking yard. Quote

95greenSE Posted November 18, 2015 Author Report Posted November 18, 2015 I called discount tire and they said they got a way to get them off, I got to get two tries anyways so I'm going to have them do it and replace the keys, and all I wanted to do was to change the rear breaks in the damn thing.....oh well. jman093 Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 You could also just run down to Sears and get a set of these: http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-pc-flip-socket-set-with-red/p-00947392000P?sellerId=SEARS&prdNo=3&blockNo=3&blockType=G3 That's what the shop is going to use to take them off. Every mechanic and wheel thief has a set of those. Work great. I've used them lots of times. No more difficult than removing a regular lugnut. Quote
95greenSE Posted November 25, 2015 Author Report Posted November 25, 2015 Well got my flip socket set today and they work wonders, little effort getting these damn keys off....THANKS GUYS!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk vipmiller803 1 Quote
55trucker Posted November 25, 2015 Report Posted November 25, 2015 my-o-my.......that's one very unhappy looking lug nut....... Quote
94 olds vert Posted November 25, 2015 Report Posted November 25, 2015 The picture 55Trucker posted is the exact same lug nuts I used to have on my old 91 GP. What a pain it was to remove those. Every time I did I managed to strip one out. Quote

GOT2B GM Posted December 18, 2015 Report Posted December 18, 2015 Just hulk smash a 12 pt socket on there and remove. If 20mm doesn't work try a 19mm or 3/4" Sent from my 2012 Buick Regal GS Quote
