BoardAgent Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 Does anyone have any info on which makes and model years used the 1.5 DIN? I've got a 94 Cutlass and it has the 1.5 DIN size radio opening. I want to go back to stock, but I'm having a devil of a time finding the head unit in the right size. I know the 95 went to the double DIN. I'm trying to narrow down my time spent wandering the junkyard if I had a better idea of the makes and/or model years that used the 1.5 DIN. You'd think that in Michigan, the birthplace of Oldsmobile, that the junkyard would be full of them but I can't find any with my size. (And when I do, somebody has beat me to it.) I realize that some will say that I'm nuts for wanting the stock radio, but at this point I'd like to keep it that way. Thanks. Quote
Nas Escobar Posted July 28, 2015 Report Posted July 28, 2015 For the most part, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac were the first cars to get 2DIN radios. Chevrolet, Pontiac, and GMC had 1.5 DIN radios. However, it's more complicated than just that because the mounting points are different. If you want a radio for your 94, you have to get it from another Olds, not just a Cutlass. You probably have to get it from an 88 or something like that. I can confirm the Camaro radio DOES work in the W bodies, but it has ears on the side of it instead of a bracket at the bottom. You would have to cut off the ears and mount it with the pin on the back that holds it to the dash. Not the most secure but it works. BoardAgent 1 Quote
Psych0matt Posted July 28, 2015 Report Posted July 28, 2015 Pretty much any of the first gen W radios should fit/work, but it depends on how fancy you wanna get too Quote
Heartbeat1991 Posted July 28, 2015 Report Posted July 28, 2015 What does the 94 stock unit look like? I have an olds 1.5 din unit, but I am not sure what year it's from. If it's the right one, I can sell it to you. Quote
BoardAgent Posted July 29, 2015 Author Report Posted July 29, 2015 I've never seen one in the flesh so the best I could do is photos from the interwebs. I know the mounting bracket is on the bottom and not the sides. I know there is one with a cassette player as well. Quote
Heartbeat1991 Posted July 29, 2015 Report Posted July 29, 2015 The one I have looks very much like that, but it's a tape deck. I'll see if I can find the pic I took before I pulled it out. Quote
BoardAgent Posted July 30, 2015 Author Report Posted July 30, 2015 Found it. Yep, that's it. I'm going to try to find one with the CD player. Quote
Nas Escobar Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 The CD player is known to jam on that specific radio. That's why I took it out and put in an Alpine Quote
Torque_Effect Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Tape Deck >>>> CD Player I have steering wheel controls in my 98' Monte, so I have to stay stock to keep those functional instead of spending a fortune on a aftermarket stereo that can actually use those steering wheel control adapter things, and then the actual adapter itself. Tape Deck + Cassette adapter = Winner Who uses cds anymore? Honestly? Near perfect tape deck out of a junkyard Lumina for $15 + $5 cassette adapter from a discount store, and sounds waaaay better than the $50 Pioneer with aux input that I put in my Festiva. gr_elvis Posted July 9, 2016 Report Posted July 9, 2016 I have a stock am fm cassette in my 93 I'm planning on replacing because I want an aux plug and cd player . What would you give me for the stock unit? Quote
RPE1992GPSE Posted July 14, 2016 Report Posted July 14, 2016 I have a factory Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme CD player with mounting bracket. It is a rebuildable core. Quote
