gmrulz4u
If all you want to do is be able to Read OBD-II codes, at a cheap cost, there's a whole bunch of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43998&item=2444011252 ...on eBay. They look pretty simple...they only work on GM, Ford and Chrysler I believe, but still, for $43, not bad at all!

Who the f*** knows!!?? A friend of mine has a 1995 Intrepid, and all you do to check the codes is turn the ignition to ON 3 times in 5 seconds or less, and that's it!! Chrysler went directly from OBD-1 to OBD-2 with no crap in-between...

MaroonRegal
Chrysler went directly from OBD-1 to OBD-2 with no crap in-between... Yeah, but it's a bigger concern for them, since they're so much more likely to break.
PaPaPooh
he is talking about the obd 1 scanner not the clip

Either one will work.. depends on how much you want to spend You should have them at your work. Plus i havnt had a chance to use it while the manager wasnt looking They're SUPPOSED to let you use it. Bastards. Our mgr. suggested we all go out and try it on our/employees cars so we can get a better feel for how it will work in different situations. Any new equipment is like that.. ya can't sell it if ya don't know how to use it. But yeah, I've used that one on my car a few times.. works good. PJB
Either one will work.. depends on how much you want to spend You should have them at your work. These expensive pieces are what I'm talking about: My friend just bought an Auto Xray 2000 from JC Whitney and it was $200. It works just as good as the $2k ones. Advance Auto called him today (he owns a repair shop) and asked him if he wanted to buy a scanner for $1950.

That's what I have, an AutoXray. The only thing that sucks about it is the number of parameters. For GM 2.8/3.1 engines, and almost all others, it only has like 50 parameters of which only about 15 are actually useful. The expensive ones have WAY more abilities and scanner parameters. For example, the AutoXray's don't show ANY EGR Valve data! Plus, something as simple as the Power Steering Pressure Switch, it won't tell you if it's activating or not. All in all though I still LOVE my AutoXray!
PJB
It shows EGR on my friend's. He's scanned a few cars and an EGR code came up.

No, no, I'm talking about the DATA Parameters, meaning what LIVE Data can be viewed/scanned. It will show ALL DTC(Trouble Codes)'s, I know:) There are SO many AutoXray variants that it can be confusing... Your friend probably just has the OBD-II Code Reader. All that does is display DTC's, but it doesn't let it you actually monitor sensor data etc.
PJB
Im not sure about that kind of data. Weve never needed to use it in the 3 weeks he's had it.
GPRACER
here's where working at a dealership comes in handy. The scanner we use is called Tech II, we have adapters to use it with any computer controlled GM vehicle, I use it on my 95, and my old 86 s-10. I'd like to be able to buy one for myself but they are about 3,000 to buy. We are allowed to use any shop tool we want, we just have to sign it out.
