i broke both bolts off inside the rear exhaust manifold when i removed my 3.1/blown Getrag 282. when the time came to lower the 3.1/new Getrag 282 into the engine bay, i completely forgot about the two broken bolts! to make matter worse, i left the exhaust downpipe for last; so i got EVERYTHING done before i finally remember that i broke both bolts off. CRAP! can anyone here tell me if it is possible to R&R the rear manifold without taking the engine back out? PLEASE tell me it's possible cuz i really don't want to take my engine/trans out for the 4th time :?

fwiw, it has a Getrag 282 so that should make the job easier since there is no monsterous 4T60 in the way. i am hoping i can R&R the rear exhaust manifold by rotating the engine forward and tying it down, then remove the lower manifold bolts from the bottom, and the upper bolts from the topside. if i'm really lucky, i might be able to leave the manifold in place, then drill into the bolts and use a screw extractor - i'm not sure. any help would REALLY be apreciated, thanks!

anyway, if it can't be done without removing the engine and tranny again, then my TGP engine will be going in. my TGP engine has been waiting in my brothers garage for 6 months now. problem is, is that my TGP engine is about 250 miles away from my Cutlass, which isn't driveable. i haven't even driven the Cutlass since August :( HELP! all this time without driving my CS is turning me into a Turbo Dodge fanatic!

i took my rear manfold off of my monte (3.4 X) front the top just rocking it forward. tim did his from under the car when it was on a lift getting turboed. both are 60*V6's so it should be about the same... the downpipe was also off at the time and so was the x-over..

hope this helps,

well today i drove my Cutlass for the first time since last September - i had to replace the blown Getrag 282. i got the tranny swap done about 2 months ago, and couldn't start or drive the car because i broke both studs off the rear exhaust manifold. well i finally replaced the rear exhaust manifold and it runs and drives GREAT! i couldn't be happier :) i can't believe how easy the exhaust manifold job turned out to be. i didn't even have to rock the engine forward at all. right now i can't tell if my Cutlass is faster, or my GTS @ 4psi :)

Probably help if you have small arms like me. I would suggest not only tilting the engine forward, but also work from underneath too (with the car on jackstands of course). I know i can reach up from underneath even with my car resting on the ground and the engine NOT tilted forward, but i have skinny ass arms.

working from underneath and/or rocking the engine forward was not necessary at all. i had plenty of room just by taking the alternator off. it was probably only an hour long job.
