GP1138
I went to auto class tonight equipped with a new rubber (not cork!) tranny pan gasket and six quarts of tranny fluid to fix my leaking fluid problem. I did all the stuff, made a mess of my hands and arms, and wasted good fluid to find out my DRIVER'S SIDE AXLE SEAL is leaking. Fuck that. Now I gotta find out how much it costs to fix, or if I can do that myself (bugger that happening). AAmco fixed it in the first place. I think they have a warranty on stuff like that. I gotta find that receipt, does anyone know how long it is? I think the work was done in late '02. UGH. I HATE THESE TRANSMISSIONS!
Guest TurboSedan
it's actually not too hard to pull the axles out of a W-body (or pulling the engine/trans out for that matter). i have replaced axle seals a couple of times now, BUT i did it when the engine/trans was out of the car. the seals are sometimes a PITA to pry out of the tranny case, but installing them is simple. your big problem will be accesablility to the axle seals while the engine/tranny is still IN the car. sorry i'm not much help.... fwiw, i'm pretty sure the Getrag 282 uses the same axle seals as the autos; even the Getrag A555 and the Getrag A568 in my GTS use the same type of axle seal. it's not really the tranny that is at fault - maybe they were installed wrong and the axle seal lip rolled inward during installation? gotta watch out for that :!: good luck joshua
5speedz34
All, you gotta do is pull the ball joint, caliper, and tie rod off the strut knuckle and pull the CV joint out and the seal is right there.
GP1138
Do I have to drain all the tranny oil/fluid? I'm gonna start with a bottle of transmission stop leak, and see what that does. I'm losing about a quart every two/three days. It drips about a CD size puddle if left sitting for a half hour. I hate it. I'm going to Aamco today to see if they'll look at it without making me pay for it, because they did the service, but it's unlikely. I'm not sure I want those asshats looking at my transmission anyway...
5speedz34
Well when you take the CV out all the fluid is gonna come with it, if you save it u can pour it back in.
4spdz34
not all the fluid will come out and if you only jack up the drivers side of the car even less fluid will come out
GP1138
Yeah, it needs replaced very soon. There are little droplet stains of tranny fluid right in front of my car, from where I back into my space in front of our Neon. I'm pretty much decided, I need a new engine and tranny anyway. I'm gonna bite the bullet, and swap a 3800 in, and a new transmission. What transmission would fit and bolt up to the 3800? I'll check the pages around here for that too.
