97cutlass
Hey guys!Thinking about changing my transmission filter but, have a few questions.First,is synthetic ATF compatible with regular stuff just like motor oil?I'm planing on just dropping the pan,not a flush. If so,anyone have any experiences mixing regular with Amsoil,Mobil 1 or the Walmart Tech stuff? Would raising the front of the car using ramps have any effect on the ammout of old fluid that will come out?Is it a good idea to run the car just prior to dropping the pan? Redfox340
You shouldn't have problem mixing minimal amounts of different fluid. But definitely try to avoid excessive mixing. Dropping the pan you should expect to see 8 - 10 pints of fluid. Running the car before-hand is great idea since it'll warm the fluid and it'll drain out faster. - Erik
97cutlass
I guess mixing wasn't the way I should have worded it.What I wanted to know was if it is ok to add synthetic to replace the regular atf(8-10 pints)?

How many miles? If you haven't felt and slipping or disengagement of the tranny, you should be fine. I changed to Sythetic fluid on my 155K old Cutlass DOHC and had no problems. But, at the same time, I knew that my tranny could handle it due to it's previous maintenance record. Sythetic will break up (if any) deposits of shavings in the tranny, and may create leaks if high mileage on tranny. Otherwise, I see no problem! Enjoy! - Erik
The Burning Rom
Shouldn't have any problems. I replaced the stock fluid in my 90 LE (4T60) at 122k with Amsoil synthetic ATF. I'm at 129k now and still no problems. I even filled it 4 quarts over like Jeff M. recommended. 8)
97cutlass
Thanks for the input guys.Got it done today.Went with the cheapo stuff from Walmart $13 Canadian for 8 litres...First time doing this,a few questions... What was on my magnet that had the consistency of butter? When i pulled the old filter off,the little ring around the spout of the filter stayed in the tranny & didn't seem to want to come out. So,i just took it off the new one & pushed it up into the old one.Can the filter be pushed up too far?I'm guessing when full the fluid level is well above the top of the spout. Do you also use Amsoil oil?Thinking bout giving it a try next time as it gets pretty cold here.A lot of sub zero starts & short trips. Can't plug a block heater in either.Thinking a good synthetic may help a little. 4 Quarts over?I always thought too much was bad, hard on seals ect... The stuff on your magnet was metal shavings. I use Amsoil Synthetic ATF...not oil And 4 quarts over is perfectly safe on the 4T60 transmission. 8)

If there's not a tight seal, the tranny won't engage since fluid is being utilized. - Erik
