JFortner5
I hope I'm at the right place, I just bought a 2007 Impala. It has a 3.5L/4T65E. I'm having an issue with the transmission. I'll describe it the best I can. When taking off from a stop everything seems ok. The 1-2 and 2-3 are a little soft for my liking but whatever. The problem comes when the converter locks. Depending on load sometimes it will pulse in and out and the rpm will go up or down. The lock up just seems sloppy. I know now on these that it's not just on and off, but a gradual engagement of the TCC. Sometimes it just seems like it gets confused and will start to lock and then unlock again. Sometimes it will lock and pulse, and sometimes it will do just fine. The car has 121k, and from a quick check of the dip stick the fluid has probably not been changed. It's kind of a maroon color, but does not smell burnt. My plan is to drop the pan and change the filter. I'm thinking about doing a transgo kit to firm the shifts up a little while I'm in there. Sometimes the 1-2 and 2-3 feel like a little thump but only under very light throttle. Harder throttle and it gives a decent shift. I also read that the TPS can cause TCC issues. It makes sense but I just wanted to see what everyone's opinion is on whether I'm on the right track. Thanks for your time, and I hope to learn a lot from this forum. This is my first Chevy and first W-body. Joey
Euro
Welcome Joey! It sounds like a TCC issue, my 00 Grand Prix did this same thing but I unfortunately never did anything about it. My dad's old 04 Impala did the same thing, and he got the TCC solenoid replaced if I remember right and it seemed to fix the problem. JFortner5
Thanks, before I go any further is the 06+ Impala still considered a W-body? Wikipedia says so but you know how that is. Anyway, hopefully the thing will last a while. I bought this car from a family member for $1000. Nothing wrong with it besides the TCC. They offered it to me cheap instead of trading it in. I never thought I'd like an impala but it's growing on me a little.
2001goldGTP
Yes its still a wbody, the wbody impala will actually run through 2016 but the last few (maybe 4) are fleet cars only mainly police contracted cars
Euro
I had forgotten they were going to be made out that far for the fleet use. I saw one on a lot not too long ago that had a 2014 sticker on the windshield, I thought they/I were nuts They really are great cars. My dad's had his 07 LTZ for 2 years I think and has racked up over 70k miles in that time, had a previous gen 04 LS before that that was a great car. My in-law's have a '13 LT and an '02 Base that are problem free. The w-body in general is a car that will last forever when maintained properly. It's been a big reason why I've owned (now) 4 of them, and was a big reason for buying our 09 for my wife.
JFortner5
That's good to know. I definitely see several every time I'm out on the road, both newer and older ones so that does say something about them. Yeah I can kind of drive around this problem but it is annoying especially around 40-45mph when it locks in 4th. That's when I get the most surge. Here's another question while I'm here, how would I check motor mounts? This is my first FWD car. Do the lower mounts typically go bad or is it the dogbones? I'm not sure if it's an issue but sometimes when I start the car it's like I can feel the engine shake a little. Maybe it's normal. No chunks or anything. I worry too much about stuff, especially when I get a new car. Thank you guys for the welcome and advice. Joey
Euro
They both can wear out honestly. I'm not sure if the mounts are the exact same for yours as they are on my Regal, but both sets wore out on mine. I replaced the lower mounts Spring of last year and they were pretty worn, they're liquid filled rubber and the rubber wears down/breaks apart and the liquid starts seeping out. For the lower mounts, unhook the dogbones and rock the motor back and forth. There'll be movement, but not a lot. I was able to move my engine up enough with my hands to do my rear plugs Dog bones, I always look by trying to rock the engine with the dogbones attached. No big deal, having a new-to-you car makes a car guy's senses become extra alerted to things haha.

We have had a brand new 14 W Impala for fleet sold through my work, but also have a used 14 W Impala Ltz on our used lot for sale. Love they still exsist on the lot

I'm weird, but I always like it when I see a W of any kind sitting on a new car dealer's lot instead of being carted off to go through the sewer system that is wholesale auction and shady used car lots
