pitzel
Used a strong degreaser, and cleaned all the stuff off the bottom of the engine. Turns out some of my oil leak is red, meaning its from the transaxle. Leak appears to be from the 4T60's Side Cover Gasket. Aside from the mess, and having to remove the axle, can this gasket be replaced on-car?
mfewtrail
It can be replaced with it in-car. The subframe needs to be lowered in order to remove the pan IIRC. There might be a how-to/writeup somewhere on here but I could be wrong. Edited July 31, 2014 by mfewtrail
pitzel
Yeah looked at my factory service manual. Engine has to be supported from above, and drop the subframe. Unfortunately beyond my skill/tool level at this time. Someday maybe though.
pitzel
On that note, filter-wise, Rockauto lists a whole bunch of different filters for the 1992, and apparently they were made with 3 different transaxles, the 3T40, the 4T60, and the 4T60-E. Are the 4T60 and 4T60-E filters compatible with each other? I ended up ordering the Hastings TF142, but now I'm second-guessing myself. rich_e777
Always get the recommended parts for your car. There are differences between the 4T60 and the "E" electronically controlled version. It sounds like a bigger job than what it is. Especially when you plan on doing several things in the process. Now before this week I would never suggest any sort of additive for then engine or trans other than Seafoam, but I was told to use TRANX made by K&W on my 4t60-e to see if it would help a delayed engagement issue and for the 4th day after I have had no shifting issues at all. If anything it shifts better. The product is suppose to rejuvenate the seals and gaskets to eliminate leaks. It might be worth the $8 to try it out before digging into some fun. Galaxie500XL
As I recall, there's two different versions, depending on year. The early cars, I seem to remember the side pan can be removed with the crossmember in place, later T460E's have a different pan, and a mount attached to the subframe, which requires the subframe to be dropped. Keep in mind, I'm working from memory...but it should be easy to confirm whether I remembered this right.
