Nas Escobar
So instead of hijacking that other thread, I'll be making my own. I've been having this issue for the longest of time, I think as far back as the LIMG issue I had. So usually, I'll start the car, and drive. IF I wait for the engine to heat up to 150ish, and jump on the high way, I usually have a minute of 4th gear before being kicked back down. The most I've been able to drive the car on 4th gear is 4 hours, and I notice this issue gets worse in the summer than in the winter. So naturally since discovering tunerpro, I check the PCM to see what the computer is doing. That's when my suspicions were confirmed. The PCM is not recognizing 4th gear and will drive up to 3rd gear only. I usually notice if I drive around the city, I can get the car to go into 4th gear in the speed it normally would (40-45) but I can't maintain it past 50mph. I've then come to realize that there's 2 codes that get stored but never trigger the SES light. Those 2 codes are: P0740 TCC and P0755 SSB. At a certain point, I was storing the code for the neutral safety switch, but hasn't been a problem since I replaced it. P0755 has come up fairly recent, but there are times where I trigger P0740 to be stored in the computer. None of the trans codes force the light on so that's the interesting part. At this point, I'm considering the TCC solenoid and the 3-4 Shift Solenoid are failing at the least and I may have to swap the torque converter at the most. So with that being said, where should I go from here?
RobertISaar
IIRC, none of the trans specific codes are supposed to light up the SES light. if you pull the trans connector and unhook the TCC PWM wire, does your ability to stay in 4th/with the TCC locked improve? i know that helps some people at the cost of the TCC applying a little stiffer. Galaxie500XL
Nas; See if any of this looks familiar, it's an old thread I did with the car. I started chasing the TCC/overdrive issue within a couple of weeks of having bought the car. The good news, if you're having the issue I had, it shouldn't hurt a thing driving it that way, except fuel mileage. I drove mine for nearly two years daily without issue, before finally having the transmission repaired. http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php/42020-95-DOHC-Cutlass-P0740-no-overdrive-no-TCC-when-hot Edited July 22, 2014 by Galaxie500XL

I'll give you an update on that but first, stupid question of the day.... where's the trans connector/TCC PWM wire? Nas; See if any of this looks familiar, it's an old thread I did with the car. I have to let the car sit over night and even then, there are moments when it is cold enough (think 100F) that it will still downshift, although I can drive it longer in 4th when cold. Also, if the car is being driven and doesn't go to 4th, it will give me 4th once I reach 4th gear speeds but kicks me right out.
RobertISaar
trans connector is right above the vacuum modulator IIRC(or at least right by it). there is only one plug that goes into the 4T60E(if you don't count the VSS over on the passenger side), so it's hard to grab the wrong one. the TCC PWM wire will be brown, in position C. there is another brown wire in the connector in position E, that is the 12V feed to the other solenoids, you won't want to remove that one otherwise you'll be limited to only 3rd gear(or 2nd if the shifter is in 1/2) and have a whole lot of confusing things happen. i prefer to depin that pin out of the connector(but i can't remember which style of terminal it uses), but it could be cut, if necessary. if you cut it, the trans side of the wiring is more important to keep away from any grounds than the harness side, reason being the PCM controls the ground side of the solenoid with a constant +12V going to the solenoid, so if the trans side of the harness were to ground, the TCC PWM solenoid starts venting pressure that would otherwise be used to hold the TCC, causing slip. Nas Escobar
So you're basically saying to depin instead of disconnecting that whole harness...
RobertISaar
yeah, unplugging all of it is going to make the PCM not very happy either.
Nas Escobar
Alright, so what's the easiest way to depin it? I don't like using the flathead screwdriver method.
RobertISaar
i've used anything from a jewler's flathead to bobby pins to sweing pins to ..... a lot of stuff will work to depress the little tab holding it in. i don't remember if the connector is a 2-piece shell or not either........ i might have a spare underhood harness around here to check though. Nas Escobar
How about going through the service manual procedure for those two codes? How about you supply said book? Cuz I don't have one nor can I find one at a reasonable price.
