Heartbeat1991 Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) So this morning my TGP caught fire. The Hydac accumulator doesn't thread far enough into the PMIII housing to hold it well enough under pressure. I installed the accumulator about 4-5 months ago or so. I heard a loud thump this morning as it finally blew off the housing. It hit the crossover, leaving a decent dent in it, and landed on the trans shift linkage. The resulting brake fluid leak caught fire on the down pipe. I could not get the fire out, and by the time the fire department got there, it was too late to save it. I removed the freshly rebuilt turbo this afternoon. It seems to be unaffected by the fire. The engine and trans also seem to be largely ok. I will hook my spare harness to it this week and make sure it runs before I pull it out, along with the rear suspension. That's about all that can be saved. Sad Day. . ManicMechanic Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 This is why I keep a $20 fire extinguisher in my cars. Sorry to hear of your loss. I've seen 3 other cajun TGPs over the years. Quote
redgrandprix Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Holy crap thats awful, ive always liked the idea of a fire extinguisher in the car and this reaffirms it, a sad day for sure Sent from my YP-G70 using Tapatalk 2 Quote
redmetrix Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Wow, unexpected things certainly can happen, a bit bizarre to see a burned up TGP, but a series II 3800 car on the other hand not so much.... Quote

jman093 Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Oh my. Sorry for your luck. None of the rest of us TGP owners have a right to bitch about whatever our PM3 problems may be at the moment. Ever. Quote
Breakdown Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 I'm sorry man. I don't know what else to say to make things better. Wish I could. Quote
Gibby Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 That is aweful. I had the accumulator blow off my car in the same fashion, apparently I was lucky. I'm glad you weren't hurt. Quote
rich_e777 Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Dude. That really does suck. Would you try for another TGP or drop the engine and trans into a SE or GT? Quote
BrianG Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 So sad. Terribly sorry man. Glad you're alright. I didn't even know brake fluid was flammable. I should go purchase a couple more fire extinguishers. Quote
Heartbeat1991 Posted July 22, 2014 Author Report Posted July 22, 2014 Dude. That really does suck. Would you try for another TGP or drop the engine and trans into a SE or GT? I have another one I was in the process of parting out. I am undecided what I will do yet. I may keep the parts car and put it back together. I would need to buy some parts that I sold off of it somewhere. Or I may just sell off what parts I have and get rid of it. I don't know. Quote
Heartbeat1991 Posted July 22, 2014 Author Report Posted July 22, 2014 I am ok. The car was barely smoking when I pulled over. There was only a small flame, but with no way to put it out, it grew and grew. Quote
95cutlass Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 That is just aweful! I'm so sorry that something like that happened. I'm going to have to start keeping a fire extinguisher in my cutlass. Quote
2001goldGTP Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Thats horrible, I am sorry for your loss. I keep extinguishers in all my cars and a couple in the garage. My cutlass brakes caught on fire a couple times, i didn't need the extinguisher but it was in my hand. Good luck with either route you take. Quote
Imp558 Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Such a beautiful car so sorry to see that Quote

Well, how far are you willing to travel for a TGP? Because you know these cars show up pretty cheap and in need of work (read PM3) all over the country, but IDK how bad you would want a replacement. I think that would be easier than rebuilding a car you took apart. Quote

I think that would be easier than rebuilding a car you took apart. I still have 95% of the car I took apart. I would just need to buy a couple minor parts and put it all back together. I'm leaning towards doing this. Quote
GP1138 Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Oh man, those pictures made my heart sink. I'm glad you're OK though! Quote
