mgrinnell
Hello All, Last week I finally got my '92 Olds Cutlass Supreme S 3.1 running like a million bucks again. Yesterday, I pulled him up on ramps to do an oil change. Happy as a lark, I even vacuumed out the car. Oil change done, I tried to start it up -- cranks but no start. Aaargh. Thinking that something is still wrong with the fuel system I pulled it all apart this morning but no dice. I did, however, do a spark test and I don't appear to be getting any spark whatsoever. Besides an ignition control module or maybe a short, what else might possibly be the culprit? Thanks kindly, Mike
rich_e777
Did you check your fuel pressure? I think the older 3.1 V6s had a shrader valve you connect a gauge to on the fuel rail like the 3100 do. Also are you sure your starter isn't just grinding metal instead of turning over the engine? Only other things I can think of you didn't mention that would cause a no start but cranking scenario.

I am going to test the icm but need to replace the starter for sure.
nitehawkjcb
Coil packs, ICM, or anything else ignition related (wiring, switch, etc) could lead to no spark.
mgrinnell
Coil packs, ICM, or anything else ignition related (wiring, switch, etc) could lead to no spark. Good call -- I removed the ignition control module and found one of the connectors was bad. Unfortunately, I was not bright enough to take note of which bolt went in which hole -- there are two shorter and one longer. I assumed (dumb to assume, I know) that the longer one went in the bottom (-- each side of the plate has a bolt and in the middle of the bottom there is another). It got late last night and I was grumpy so I left the bottom bolt for today. Not sure if the longer goes in the bottom and have looked all over for any schematic or hint to make sure I have the right ones in the right places but have not been able to find anything. Any idea where I can find those details?
rich_e777
I`d imagine a busted starter solenoid would be an issue. Fix that thing first as it for sure will not allow a car to start.
