The McLaren 3100 Turbo

I've looked at ordering one of these kits from GM as a "replacement part" for my Monte for years. What has people's experience with them been? I'm fairly interested in this.

Same setup, manifold and fuel rails were different, I've seen a guy do a 3400 Top swap to his 89 TGP. So it can bolt rite up to a 3100 or 3400.

Just wondering about if they're any good?

Considering but the headers and mounts from GM and then getting a similar better intercooler and turbo offline such as a garret.

Unsure it's the Turbo kit that was on the 89-90 3100 Turbo Grand Prix

How do you plan to order this "kit" if you don't have a part number?

First Guess: There never was a turbo "kit" from GM.

Second Guess: Whatever they had for parts were discontinued years ago.

Third Guess: This thread is another waste of time.

i want to say the 3100 exhuast manifolds don't bolt straight up with a tgp crossover and that some fab is required, tgps came with garrett turbos already unless you are saying you would get a better garrett turbo and like schurkey stated if these "kits" were ever made they are probably discontinued.

GMDirectParts order parts they stocked from GM.

Buy everything but the Turbo itself. It's out of stock. Also yes I would want a better turbo, IDE rather have a 2000 turbo than a 25 year old style turbo.

Looking for more than 7-9 0-60 with my 3100 were considering a 3400/3500 swap (gave up on the 3900 because there is way to much wiring) so were gonna try and get a 3400/3500 at Pull a Part and rebuild it, or we might go with a Turbo instead seeing as it can increase performance, and gas mileage(as long as you're not driving it like it's turbo'd all the time) for a similar price. Also could I continue using my Hypertech pistons, and would I have to upgrade to 3800 injectors?

unless you are going to use the stock tgp intercooler i'm pretty sure most of the items there are useless for a 3100 or atleast part #5 in the part diagram is definitely useless since you don't have a 3.1 mpfi, i don't recognize the bracket but i'm not sure it's completely necessary. if you want to buy a new turbo garrett's are around a grand maybe a little less depending on size and the cheapest garrett intercooler from atp turbo is around $400

There's a guy where my parents live who rebuilds and resells turbos for half price or lower get a garret t45 for about $150-500 depending on what he paid for it and to fix it. Might be able to get a deal since him and my dad have been friends for 40 years or so. Intercooler I'll have to look into them, I'm not sure about his prices on them. Also that's not too bad for a good intercooler cheapest I've seen is $100 but it looked cheap.

So would the headers from a 3.1 fit a 3100? That's something I've been confused about since they're so similar.

If you have a 3100, parts from a 3.1 don't fit it. And you'd be going backwards to boot.

The bracket in the diagram is nothing more than an extra brace for the turbo. It mounts to the block and the tranny, and the crossover bolts to that. To add a turbo to a 3100 or a 3400 would require fabricating your own exhaust and intake piping, bigger injectors, a tune, and a bunch of oil/coolant plumbing, as well as finding adequate space for the turbo, which usually requires moving things around, such as the battery.

The photo looks to be an SC/T clone. These were a souped up Grand Am GT with an Eaton M62 supercharger. I did one many many years ago, and it costs a fortune.

I found a guide last night it doesn't seem that hard to do with the 3100/3400 just welding is the fun part.

Alright so pretty much those are pointless.

Need about 10ft of steel piping and weld them the angles I need them.
