Schurkey
NUMBER ONE: Cranking compression test. If it comes back low and even, suspect cam timing. If the compression is appropriately high and even, cam timing isn't a problem. I suppose the cranking compression could come back excessively high, which might indicate a minor cam-timing problem, but I think that's unlikely. NUMBER TWO: Pull the front plugs. I bet they're fuel-fouled. If they are, pull the rear plugs, too. A propane torch can clean fuel-fouled plugs. NOT MAPP or Acetylene--those fuels burn too hot. Propane works nice, though. Yellow flame indicates gasoline on the plugs, orange flame indicates you're about done. The porcelain of the plug will come out nice and white. If it doesn't, either you didn't process them with the propane torch long enough, or the plugs simply need to be replaced. REMEMBER: Spark at the plug wires does NOT mean you have a spark across the plug gap. Edited March 24, 2014 by Schurkey
intern8tion9l
That is the most well equipped Richard Petty car I have ever seen. I was thinking the same thing. I can't provide any help, but i hope the members with 3.4 knowledge can get you back on the road
mfewtrail
Where are you located? It's possible one of our members that could help you narrow down the diagnosis process might live nearby. I see snow in the pictures, so that counts me out.
jw16
umm im sorry for the late reply, work was swamped with spring break and all. but i live in thornton colorado just north of denver. My plugs are immaculate but i still replaced them with irridiums, but the car will be getting a new map sensor or icm tomorrow just to for sure eliminate those as culprits.... the shop did do the timing correct but they want to say its the internal chain and quote 1500 before they for sure know, thats what was fishy to me but it is very possible, they were just asses to me so im biased... i have a pontiac collector looking to buy it. I would love for it to go to a good home like that, i would love the car and do so much to it but abuse it in the process and i feel the car should be in a showroom, repainted and cleaned up... but idk what to do at this point. tomorrow heres my list of what im doing -reattaching gas tank and adding gas -compression test (though i know bottom end had compression just not the intake plenum) -check tdc timing alignment -junkyard for new gp doorhandles (curse the side mount door handles!!!) -check or replace icm or coil packs -check or replace map sensor -check fuel pressure at the rail -check injector pulse visually and electronically for function -put the puppy all together, thankfully i have 2 more hours of daylight now! Antone is welcome to come take a look at it whenever
jw16
Thanks guys too for all the compliments about how well equipped the car is, i agree for a 22 year old car its sound sytem is deafening but clear, everything works, but the cheap buttons have cracks or holes on some, the sunroof, front and rear consoles, most comfortable seats other than my charger but the GP has better back support, motor when i drove it hauled so much ass for a 4000 lb wide ass car (tiny next to my car though haha) has over drive, 2nd gear launch, cd player (in the early 90s was like a radio in a 70s mopar haha), HUD (needs bulb, i think) variable knob equalizers, steering controls, power antenna, power gas lid, and who knows what else.............. lets just say after writing this i wanna sit in it and go for a cruise!
