I've searched and searched and searched....But there isnt a decent thread out there that gives me definate info on all that I would need to do this swap.

the plan is to top swap my L26 and drop in a manual trans to go road racing. I dont plan on making more than 300hp.

I am getting the trans, shifter, cables, pedal box, and what not for a great deal.

What clutches are still available?

What axle inner tulips do it need?

Is the 282 trans mount the same or no?

What flywheel can I use? Will a factory 284 flywheel work on a 3800?

Starter from a 3800 work?

I'm sure I'll have more questions

I think there was something with the oil adapter out of a Reatta. and a couple other things.. I think Kuntzie may have an idea as he has a 3800 with a getrag 284.

282 trans munt is different physically but can be used it will bolt up. 2 I believe left side axles from a 4t60 I think? axles should be plenty available. Spec has a Stage 3 clutch that will hold that power. Im not sure about spacing between the 660 and the 90* engines.

Kuntzie still lurking around? I'm not on here often these days.

The 282 mount will bolt up to what? The trans or the cradle? I really just need it for mock up since I wanna run a more solid mount anyways.

I read that the two 4T60 tulips will work on the 282's but not the 284?

I haven't seen Kuntzie much on any W-body forum in a while, but find him on FB. I think I'm friends with him still, but if not I'm sure it'll be easy to find him. Jeff Kuntz is his name

Cough cough, come on guys; Kuntzie's not the only one who knows this stuff:

I'm assuming this is in regards to the Lumina in your sig, so since you mention a 284 specifically, I'll just cover a few of your questions:

Spec is your best bet for clutches, IMO. Go with at least a "Stage 2" if you're going the route of SC3800.

If you are indeed using a 284, if you have both entire axles, that will be all you need. No hybrids if the axle is in one piece.

You have to use a flywheel from a ~'98-2002 3800 F-body (Camaro or Firebird, doesn't matter) and turn it down the clutch face to .084", as measured from the crankshaft mounting pad/ hub on the back of the flywheel. You may find as I did that while the aftermarket new FW's are cheap, they don't always go well while turning them down (see pg 2 of my thread above). I ultimately grabbed a JY, which was a original factory one.

Not sure about the 282 mount similarities/ differences, but they are still available; whereas the 284 mounts are not.

Yes, any 3800 starter will be fine to use. No modification needed.

How the hell your thread is not a sticky or a faq is beyond me....

Couple more questions. I dont have a set of 284 axles. And theyre hard as hell to find. I am also going to 2nd gen front knuckles and bearings so they would have to be hybrids. Can you test fit your old axles to try and see if they slide onto the trans at all?

Can you post a photo of your trans mount just so I have a reference please

How hard would it b to get a set of those a arms? Quick tip youllneed to cut about an inch off the gen two tie rods. Gen 1 wont fit the spindle. If you run stock length gen2 tie rods ur car will b more pidgeon toed than a hillbilly girl after a gang bang :)

Circle track style lower contol arms with the ball joint in them. 2nd gen struts with coil overs on hem. GT500 rotors with C5 or C6 calipers

I'm going to have to try and find a close pr made set or make my own. You can get all the peices separately. Cutiing down the tie rods wont be a problem.

I saw you can buy these flywheels already done. I saw the website once when I googled 3800 trans swap spec flywheel

Yea but its a lot of $$$$

Ya, not sure why it hasn't been made sticky worthy yet. Maybe I just have to ask, haha. In regards to the axles, I unfortunately got rid of them when I sold my 4t65e earlier in the fall, so I can't test fit them unless I "borrow" one from the parts store. I'll check it for you, but IIRC, the spline count is different on the inner shaft(s). I also just ran out to snap a quick pic of the trans mount since there's 2 of you now that wanted it. Sorry it's taken me so long.

  • 3 weeks later...

Not sure specifically about your situation but in my Impala I used 2 driver side axles from a 97 gp with the 4t60e not 4t65e. Most of the info you will need is in my build thread over on naioa.com.

That's good to know. I am not sure if I wasn't paying enough attention or it's never been mentioned about doing that. That makes it a lot easier to source axles if need be.
