4T60E 744 & 747

Tried searching with no luck. Anyone know the difference between the 4T60E's with the bell housing stamped 744 on one and 747 on the other. The reason I'm wondering is because I've got a 95 GP that has 744 stamped on the bell housing located under the throttle body and my parts car as a 747 stamped on the bell housing. I've talked to a few friends and they don't know what the difference is or would be.

I'll take pictures tomorrow for you.

Same insane powerplant (I'm joking, it's a 3100) but out of a 96 GP.

747 bolted right up. Torque converters were the same and had no problems bolting it all right up. Everything is tight and feels great.

I've got several cans of degreaser to clean everything up. The bay is already cleaned. I sprayed a can of degreaser on the engine before I left for the day. I'll do a good wash tomorrow then spray another can or two of degreaser (then pressure wash it again).

Edit: I also want to mention that the parts car the trans came out of had 270k miles and was rotting away (got a nasty video which I'll upload to YouTube later). It was the third trans in that GP (put in last year). Luckily my GP was undercoated and has almost NO rust (which has been a Montana car for 20 years!)

Should be the same :)

The stamped number make me curious. I'm wondering if the stamps are different (on the bell housing under the throttle body) maybe because of having a different final drive ratio (went from 95 to 96 trans).

5AFW vs a 7AFW.... essentially identical, other than year produced. torque converter might have slight differences internally(clutch material), but i think that was a 98+ change, not 97.

that trans has a 97 tag.... but anyways, there were 2 known 97 W-body 3100 4T60E transmissions, 7AFW and 7AHW, AFW is still the 3.33 final drive, AHW is the 3.29 final drive "fine pitch" version that AFAIK interchanges with the 4T65.

Interesting. I think I understand how the stamping works due to my GP being made in Aug of 94 (hence the 744). I know the trans was the original one (after 176k miles). I actually know the only 2 previous owners of the vehicle.

Those numbers are NOT STAMPED. They're cast-in. A stamping would be pressed-into the metal, the casting is raised.

First guess: Different mold numbers.

Course itd bolt up. :) Contrary to common belief an l36 torque converter will bolt right up to a 3x00 flexplate. So from 3100 to 3100 yeah :)
