crazyd Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Picked up a white '91 GTP from Cali last week and am in the process of restoring it. Working through a long punch list of stuff that I can deal with, but it looks like the big one is 3rd gear has a syncro grind even after a fluid change. If I can't find another one to replace the whole thing, has anyone ever been able to swap parts from another 284 and successfully put it back together? How directly does a 282 bolt in? Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Did you use the friction modified fluid? I've heard a few people say that's the way to go, and I myself have some for spring. I have the exact same problem, and I know parts are hard to find Quote
crazyd Posted November 26, 2013 Author Report Posted November 26, 2013 No, just used synchromesh. how do you cook up some of the FM stuff? Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 I searched around and had to order some. It's a bit pricey, but I've heard it's well worth it. It's ac delco friction modified syncromesh. There's an old and new part number depending on where you find it, but if it says friction modified it's the same thing. One is AC Delco, on is GM something or other Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 There are two fluids offered by GM. Regular syncromesh, and friction modifier. You want the regular syncromesh. Its about $17 a qt. Quote
Night Fury Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 I used friction modified and it almost completly solved all the issues my 284 was having. I can't say for sure if the regular stuff wouldn't have done the same..... The 'liquid' that came out was just MUD. I about threw up. Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 When I do mine I should video the before, what comes out, and after... Quote
