slick
Unless you plan on running some boost, it's really not worth it. You could port and polish the heads yourself, just gasket match them. I wouldn't even do a 3 or 5 angle valve job though, waste of time, unless you plan on running boost. If you had it done, plan on spending big bucks.
Vegeta
What do you mean by machining? Just decking them? If you have the heads off, it is a good idea to have them decked and cleaned. A valve job is not a waste of time, as it ensures the valves will seat fully, and increase flow/quality of flow past the valve and valve seat. A 3 angle valve job should be cheap, at least it is here. As for "just gaske match them", that would be a really stupid thing to do on the exhaust side. You wont see much power increase at all from merely gasket matching the intake side of the heads.
Intlcutlass
I spent $220 for the labor , and about $439 in parts. Stainless steel valves and all proformance rods, proformance keepers, roller rocker arms, retainers, 3 angle valve job. I have not installed them, so I can't tell you that it was a huge help, but I am positive this is a huge gain.
Vegeta
Performance keepers? The only thing you mentioned that will increase performance is the 3 angle valve job. Lighter valves will help some, mostly at allowing higher RPM operation. Performance rods have nothing to do with heads though so you lost me there. Intlcutlass
I just gave em the parts (my NAPA guy) , they put them together for me, I just included the cost (that I paid) for the whole deal. Sorry if I confused anyone.... I had purchased then entire "performance head kit" from ARI. Thats why I listed the parts the way I did.... Oh and the spings are much stronger...that will help lighter valves like you mentioned roller rocker arms will add a bit (comp cams claims up to 20 hp) the three angle valve job will help (unless your heads have 0 buildup in them, like thats possible after any sort of serious milage) ARI lists this stuff as: PERFORMANCE HEAD PARTS KIT Includes: Performance Stainless Steel Valves, Performance Valve Springs, Performance Retainers, and Performance Keepers. The Same Parts we use in our Performance Cylinder Heads!!! Performance Push Rod Set - GMV6-PR1-$84.95 Stock Push Rod Set - GMV6-PR2 - - $36.95 The only thing I didn't flip for was the port & polish. Once again I'm sorry I lumped the valvetrain shit in there to, that was just the cost for me to get back my heads. The 3 angle valve job was $150. I think it was cheaper cause of all the crap I had done.
Vegeta
Stronger springs = less power if you dont need them. More resistance against the crank by having to push against stronger springs. 3 angloe valve job is 50 bucks here, ARI raped you. If you didnt get the P&P, your not gonna see any gains really. 20 hp on roller rockers, in a fantasy world. Even if they are 1.6 ratio you are looking at less than 5 hp (maybe 1 hp if they are 1.52:1).
Intlcutlass
I agree withyou about the claims that most manufactures stamp on some of the parts, I tend to expect about half of the claim. If I am able to produce more than that, bonus. All of the parts I went with were based of off a TGP engine. So i think I do need the stronger springs. The 3 angle valve job may be $50 bucks by you , but when I was calling around , EVERYPLACE I called wanted 200-300. I didn't have ARI do the valve job , they just spplied me with parts , I have the valve job done locally.
Vegeta
So you are boosting your engine?
Intlcutlass
Yep. But I'm not going nuts with it or anything, the OEM t-25 is fine. It's my daily driving car. I had for a long time wanted to drop this engine in the my Fiero , but Ihave found a more suitable engine for that , so I am going to drop the 3.1 Turbo , into the Cutlass (which was my original game plane anyway).
