HEMI-V8 Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 Hi ! Since a few months I´ve got a bad noise on my Regal when Im steering the wheel since driving to left. [video=youtube;ZCheZ1qoAy8]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCheZ1qoAy8 So some say that´s a broken wheel bearing, other tell its the driveshaft and another friend meant it is the from the power steering !? For me its not from the power steering and the noise from a broken wheel bearing is some different to that. What do you mean ? Many thanx in advance HEMI Quote
tornado_735 Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 Sounds to me like you have a wheel bearing that is making noise...it's a very common problem in these cars. Does it make the groaning noise when you turn the steering wheel when the car is not moving? Quote
tornado_735 Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 Does it sound like this when you are driving? I made this video a couple of years ago. [video=youtube;pilVew4cfnU] Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted November 11, 2013 Author Report Posted November 11, 2013 No, it sounds different to yours - not that typical wheel bearing groaning noise. Quote
tornado_735 Posted November 12, 2013 Report Posted November 12, 2013 I had a Grand Prix that had a wheel bearing that only made noises when the wheel was turned a certain way. Sometimes they only make noises on turns, sometimes, only going straight. Does the power steering groan when you turn the wheel with the Regal sitting stationary? I highly doubt that it is a CV Axle(driveshaft) as those usually only make a loud clicking or ratcheting sound when making sharp turns. Even then, they're not a common fail point on these cars. I am willing to bet it is a wheel bearing making noise. It's so common for them to fail, I highly doubt it's anything else. It might be the power steering, but the pump only makes that groan noise when the fluid is empty. Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted November 12, 2013 Author Report Posted November 12, 2013 Does the power steering groan when you turn the wheel with the Regal sitting stationary? No. Ok. Than it´s really the wheel bearing. I will be in touch with you about this. Thx Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted April 16, 2014 Author Report Posted April 16, 2014 Currently Im on the wheel bearings. So I got 2 questions: - Should I renew both sides ? - I need the size of the brake caliper torx screw. Can anybody tell me what size I need ? Thx HEMI Quote

Galaxie500XL Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 I'm thinking T50, but I'm going by memory. Quote
Imp558 Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 First time I did hub assemblies I broke one of those Torx bolts and one of the 4 hub assembly bolts and had to ride the GT across town to get new. Now I keep a couple spares around. Dealership was the only game in town for the hub assembly bolts but the parts store had the caliper bracket bolts. Those caliper bracket bolts are hard as hell and it took many drill bits to overcome one, had to ride the bike to get bits too. Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted April 17, 2014 Author Report Posted April 17, 2014 Thank you guys ! I got it. WD40 and a little gentle power made it. Now Im just waiting for the new one from rockauto. But the brakedisc looks very weird: Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 Sticking caliper? Thank you guys ! I got it. WD40 and a little gentle power made it. Now Im just waiting for the new one from rockauto. HEMI-V8 Posted April 17, 2014 Author Report Posted April 17, 2014 The brake caliper runs free and easy. Quote
Imp558 Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 I wonder if that was a factory weight for balance? Seriously, it's worth a phone call to the dealer to find out how expensive those 6 bolts are. My last Rockauto hub assembly lasted 2 years, I just replaced it again. Do you need torque specs Bro? Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted April 19, 2014 Author Report Posted April 19, 2014 Im ordered yesterday 2 hub assemlies @ rockauto from Timken. The shipping and duty costs are more expensive than the worth of the parts. I forgot the discount code by my order. However it´s still cheaper than the stuff from my local parts dealer in germany. Do you need torque specs Bro? Oh yes that would by awesome ! My haynes book ist there not really helpful. Regards HEMI Quote
Imp558 Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 I'll look up some specs at work and post them tomorrow. I forgot you're in Germany, lol, the bolts are about $30.USD if I remember here for the hub assembly and caliper bracket. Quote
Night Fury Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 My last Rockauto hub assembly lasted 2 years, I just replaced it again. What brand? Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted April 19, 2014 Author Report Posted April 19, 2014 So should I lube the driveshaft with grease before installing the new hub assembly ? Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 I found this pic on the forum: Can I use these torque specs 4 my regal ? Quote
mfewtrail Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 "185 to 192 ft-lbs" is what my repair info shows for a '90 Regal, so 184 ft-lbs is close enough. Quote
Imp558 Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 I just brought these home from work for you, I looked up your 1990 Regal: Drive Axle Nut 184 Wheel Hub to Knuckle 52 Caliper Bracket to Knuckle 148 Caliper to Caliper Bracket 79 Lugs 100 Lb-Ft, Alldata didn't show them in Neuton which I figured would serve you better in Germany Quote
HEMI-V8 Posted April 23, 2014 Author Report Posted April 23, 2014 So thank guys - the job is done and the bad noise is gone ! Quote
