garyab
My mother has a 93 Regal with the 2.8 V-6 which she has owned since new. Her original starter lasted the first 17 years she had the car and now she has gone through four new ones in the last three years. It is an intermittent failure, she will go out and turn the key and get nothing and then try it again 30 minutes later and it cranks right over. She talks about a clicking when it won't start but she claims she can feel it in her hand, it does not sound like a selonoid clicking. (she is 84 so I have to take this with a grain of salt) Her ignition switch has also been replaced. I'm thinking that because the car is pretty rusty on the outside that the underbody is probably the same and that maybe adding a good ground wire from the engine to the chassis would help. Has any one else expericneced this with this car?
Schurkey
Voltage drop test from battery + to solenoid +, voltage drop test from starter case to battery -. Test voltage at solenoid "S" terminal when key is in the "crank" position. Grounding engine to body won't do squat, since the engine is supposed to be grounded directly to the battery - post. Leadfoot
^^^ That. Also, does it have the VATS system? Check the chip in the key and make sure it is good. I had one fail on me recently. It was intermittent for years before it completely failed and I could duplicate it.

garyab
Thanks for the advice, I had given here the spare key that I kept at my house to see if that made a difference but it still happened after a week or so. Do I have to take the keys back to the dealer to get the chip in the checked?
Leadfoot
I just used a multi meter to test mine. The bad one gave no reading at all.
