Plug Change

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys!

I'd like to change the plugs someday in my Moms 93 Regal with a 3.1, but it looks like the rear plugs aren't going to be alot of fun to swap. Does anyone have any tips on how to make this easier?

Thanks alot!

unbolt the at the front of the motor the "Dogbones" , and tilt the motor forward. Theat gives you more room to stick you hands back there to get the job done.

Welcome to the board.

For my mother's car (3100) I usually take out the dogbones, hold then engine ahead with a chain, AND unbolt the coils packs as well. You probably don't need to, but I rather do it.

OK! Thanks alot guys!

I don't have real big arms either so maybe I can squeeze in there. Anyone know if you can get at em from underneath?

I'll try tilting the engine foreward as a last resort. Don't get me wrong though, I really appreciate the advice! Had I not asked, I wouldn't have a last resort!

I'll see if I can get at em first.

Thanks alot!

I have another question. I was wondering about the proper proceedure to re-install the plugs. This engine has aluminum heads. I know if I remove the plug with the engine too warm, problems can occur. But I'd like to pull one to inspect it and then reinstall it, but I want to make sure I do it properly for aluminum heads.

Everything else I've worked on (SBC's and SBO's) have cast iron heads.

Thanks alot!

Just make sure the engine is nice and cool, that's all, and well, dont put them in really really tight :)

the backs are actually pretty easy on the 3100. i just take the coils off and sit on the motor since im short. it looks real stupid but it works fine. i can almost see the plugs

I can do them without tilting the motor. If you have small arms and know where they are located at, go at it.

feed the plugs in by hand before you start racheting, or else you might crossthread and be fucked. And I don't think the engine has to be completely cool. Maybe after it sits for an hour or so it would be ok?

Oh, it better be! Or you may do more harm than good.

Thermal expansion is a serious issue from not having metal parts crack or warp on you.

Plus, they are aluminum heads!

How long do you think it would have to sit first?

Until the plenum is cold to the touch, so like 3-5 hours after driving it
