CPSMonteZ34
What might it sound like if I were to install a single-in / dual-out flow-through muffler like a Magnaflow to dual pipes at the rear instead of the usual dual mufflers? I'd imagine the pipe length after the muffler to the rear would give it a hollow (perhaps popping) sound, but I thought I'd ask for sure. 93GTP
I'm not sure what it would sound like, but I guess for one it'd have to be louder, considering there's one muffler versus 2. Mustangs have their mufflers mounted in front of the rear axle, and it doesnt seem to have any detrimental on them. Why would you rather use 1 muffler than 2 anyway? CPSMonteZ34
Well, if this makes any sense anyway, I just figured I could get the same sound from one muffler that will fit, split to two sets of pipes to each side rather than having to use two mufflers. There's a lot of custom bending going on to accomplish this, but I figured, "At least nobody would have to see the damned things (mufflers)." They're not exactly out of sight...and I just don't see the need for the look of stainless steel. Tips are enough for that to me.
PaPaPooh
like what the camaros and fire birds ect. have?
93GTP
You can't see the mufflers on my car at all. They arent like the fatass stocker mufflers, they're thin and the they tucked up far enough to remain out of sight.
CPSMonteZ34
PaPaPooh: Yeah, something like that, if they would fit (doubtful). If I did it this way, I'd have to go straight-line with a single-in/dual-out...if I remember the bottom of my car at all, it would end up where the Y-pipe is, and the two pipes would split to each side with what would probably end up as dual tips. 93GTP: Would those be the 5x8 ovals? From what I can tell, their body length is 14", and 20" overall - pretty much exactly the length dimensions of stock. If so, I'll probably take those over the massive stock-rounds that visibly bulge downward (and easy to spot on a white car). All this hinges on two things, that it fits, and that it doesn't sound like crap; because I simply cannot stand the sound of a really loud V6. It sounds like it might as well be a very deep 4-banger (with maybe a turbo). Too raspy and no guts. If the 5x8's work out to fit well, I'll probably go with them. I'm taking the car in tomorrow anyway, so we'll see what they think as well. Thanks for your insight...gimme more if ya got any.
93GTP
Actually they're 4 X 9 Ovals. The part number is 11224: Offset/Center In/Out Diameter 2" Canister Length 14" Total Length 20" Here are some pics I have: Underneath: From behind: (to show how they tuck in under (and I don't even have my bumper tip heatshields on yet!) 93GTP
I'd also like to mention that if you want your car to sound really good, then I'll warn you that you may have to replace your resonator and possibly your cat. My car had a rasp from 2100 - 2500 RPM, so I then started replacing other components. First I bought a Carsound high flow cat off ebay (around 35 bucks), and it dramatically improved it, but it wasnt completely gone (it wasn't hard to understand why the stock cat wasn't helping the sound any, it was completely empty inside, just an empty casing). So I then bought a glasspack (a Thrush glasspack to be exact) and stuck it in there as a resonator. And man it sounded great! But, with the usual quality of glasspacks, it started to rattle like a cheap pos, so I got a Magnaflow round muffler and stuck that there, and all I have to say now is wow Prices Both Magnaflow mufflers off a magnaflow deal on ebay ---- $100 plus shipping Carsound high-flow cat ---- $35 plus shipping Magnaflow round muffler ---- $50 plus shipping Install was $75 Can (all the other prices above are in american dollars) for the mufflers. $50 Can for the cat And $50 again for the resonator These prices probably could have been trimmed down if I had done it all at once. You may not even have to get a cat or resonator, but mine were both dead. Good luck.
CPSMonteZ34
Well, that's cool. I must have written down the wrong dimensions because I have the 11224 Aluminized on my sheet. If you say they sound o.k. I might as well just go with them. Stocks were quoted at $125 /ea installed...so we'll see what they quote for the Magnaflows. The cat and pipes are good (based on the inspection), so the only thing in question may be the resonator. If so, I'll just find out how she sounds with the mufflers. In the end, since I'm in boonie-town and may not be able to shop around for a hot price for Magnaflows in the dead-of-winter season here, I may be forced to go stocks and just wait until the pipes rot before I redo the whole she-bang. This would be my worst-case scenario...so we'll see. The bumper skirt of the Monte does not go down as low as the Prix, so I'm assuming a bit of even the 11224's may show. If that's the case, I'll probably just hose 'em down with high-temp, black paint if I think they look odd. That's what's always bugged me, the fact that the skirt does not come down far enough to cover everything. From the rear, you can tell one of the pipes from the Y leans lower, making the bottom of the car look slanted...annoying as hell. I'm going to find out if the shop can do anything about that to clean it up while they're installing the mufflers. Thanks for your help. CPSMonteZ34
Holy crap...they only want $107 for each 11224 muffler. Compare that to $125 for stock replacements and I'd have to be stupid not to take them. The stocks were that much with install complete. Maybe the Magnaflows will still need an install charge...either way, it'll work out to be about the same. I sure hope this is a lucky streak. 93GTP
You should consider trying to get the mufflers through ebay, like I said, I found someone that sold me a pair of them for $100! Although it is nice to buy something local, you have it right then and there with no waiting. Oh I'd also like to mention that the stock replacement mufflers for my car were like $450 for one side, and like $250 for the other (Canadian)! CPSMonteZ34
Yeah, I was given an absurd figure for OEM parts from the dealer when they inspected it. The whole system would have come out to over $1200. Mind you, it would last up to another 10 years this way. But like I figure, they are satisfied that the pipes are fine, so it just needs mufflers. I'll try eBay again. I didn't find squat last time. It's being taken in at 2:00 pm today for a look. That's in 45 minuntes, so I hope I find something online to use quick enough.
