Mystery coolant leak and small oil leak on Series II

Buick666

Recommended Posts

So i just bought the car 2 days ago.. Yay!

And yesterday night i went for a little ride on the highway, and when i got back home.. i noticed a tiny smell of oil coming from the engine bay.

So i take off the engine cover and what do i see? A small oil leak coming from the upper plenum gasket on the upper right drivers side of the plenum.

Then i look further on the left... i see a small coolant leak... but it doesint smell coolant at all.

So i conclude that my plenum is cracking from somewhere and the gaskets are diying on me.

Juste called GM and the plenum kit is 320$ (outch!!)

I've seen the Dorman kit on Ebay for about 120$ shipped... but i'm not sure about the quality.

Somebody can help me out on this?

P.S: I did a quick search and didint find any info on this.

Thanks guys!

I have never used this but several people on GM forums say it is one of the best plastic upper intakes.

If your lower intake gaskets are original they will need to be replaced with aluminum framed gaskets from GM or Felpro.

The factory lower intake gaskets started leaking on my Regal around 60k miles.

Allright thank you very much for the link.

Will be ordering this ASAP with GM lower plenum aluminum gasket also.

I used GM 3800II aluminum lower intake manifold gaskets part #89017816.

Be careful buying the lower gaskets from a dealer they might try to sell you plastic lower gaskets.

I think there parts books only show the good aluminum frame gaskets #89017816 for 1998 and newer 3800II motors?

You'll need to replace the coolant elbow too. It may already be leaking coolant, but it will definitely break if your replacing the intake. There's an aluminum one (sold as a two pack) in the Help! section of chain autoparts stores.

That's good to know. I will be ordering a set on ZZP and a Dorman intake kit.

I juste need to find the part number for the Fel-Pro lower aluminum gaskets.
