91cutty
well as some of you might already know, my engine and tranny are pretty well cooked. when i get the new 3.1 i was thinkin of upgrading the camshaft. i took a look on 60*v6 and have decided that the crane cams powermax 2030 would probably be the best. What exactly would i need to borrow from the rwd 3.1 to get the cam to work on the fwd 3.1. would i need to port the head and intake to take full advantage of the cam? how many HP gain am i looking at from doing this? andy
91cutty
Thanks for the info! so this camshaft can be used with the fwd 3.1's without parts from a rwd 3.1? any head/intake work needed?
Vegeta
Dont waste your time with the 2030 cam. The 260 grind gives better results and can be used with the stock computer with no problems. Port work is always good for performance, and you may as well do the heads and intakes while they are off the block. I would however suggest going with the gen 3 top end if you are serious about making power with this engine. The gen 2 intakes suck, even ported. 91cutty
I am starting to believe that it would be more cost-effective to do a complete rebuild on the motor i have. what would be needed, if anything, to fit gen 3 heads and intake on the gen 2 block? I am also thinking that with all this extra flow into the cylinders, headers would also have to be added too!? With gen 3 heads and intake, performance cam, ffp chip, ud pulley, and k&n filter how many hp over stock would i be looking at? If it's not more than 10 then, IMO, i don't think it would be worth the money and effort! Sorry for all the questions... i just don't want to sink all my money into something that wouldn't be worth it in the end!
slick
Yes, im pretty sure the gen 3 heads will fit gen 2 block. With all that, it would definately be more than 10, so do it!
Robby1870
Yes, Gen III heads bolt to the Gen II block, cuz its basically the same block. If you do the Gen III top end swap, you will need the P/S pump from the Gen III motor and everything above the heads like intakes and what not. Na, you can use your ECM, but you will need the TB, and if you get a pre-96 (I think) 3100, you can keep the MAP setup, but you will need to relocate some sensors
91cutty
Thanks for all your help! Looks like I might try the top end swap. now what kind of gains am i looking at here? Anyone else here tried it?
Intlcutlass
With gen 3 heads and intake, performance cam, ffp chip, ud pulley, and k&n filter how many hp over stock would i be looking at? If it's not more than 10 then, IMO, i don't think it would be worth the money and effort! I would be taking a wild guess , but I would say that: Stock = 140 hp K&N + 2 U/D pully + 5 Cam + 10 Chip + 3 or 4 Gen III heads are worth about 5 to 10. Just a guess , but I would say about 165-170 hp.
