pshojo
Ok, this has been subject driven to death. Trying not to revive controversy issue. Issue: 1995 cutlass convertible, 3.4 DOHC. Wanting to convert to stick shift 5 speed. If DOHC dies I would probably swap out to 3.8 engine. Have extra parts for this. *currently own a 1988 282 with all parts except flywheel and clutch. No harness-but can mod with HPtuner Fieros website help). Other costs? - Trans mount adaption required? Other ? * found 284 complete with harness and new clutch and flywheel - $1200 w/shipping Question: who has driven 282 / 284 with 3.4? Differences? Dependability between 282/284? It's debated which is stronger. But what are typical failures for both Trans? Issues with gear ratio with either Trans and either 3.8 or LQ1? I've seen the LQ1 GP 284 that just sold because of issues with fork (nice car) I've seen LQ9 with 5 speed? what costs should I expect for either? master cylinder less option available for both Trans? 19Cutlass94
Ill try and answer this the best I can... *currently own a 1988 282 with all parts except flywheel and clutch. No harness-but can mod with HPtuner Fieros website help). Other costs? - Trans mount adaption required? Other ? The trans mount can still be bought new. That is not an issue. Probably around $100 by now. You dont need a harness, just modify yours. Thats the easiest part of the swap is the wiring. The flywheel and clutch will probably cost about $300 for the 282 * found 284 complete with harness and new clutch and flywheel - $1200 w/shipping Wayyy to much money IMHO (unless seller has proof it was a fresh rebuild by Getrag, then good deal) Stay away. If you can get it for $600 or under, then Id say ok. *who has driven 282 / 284 with 3.4? Differences? I havent driven one with a 3.4, but gearing is different between the two. 284 likes high revs 282 does not. *Dependability between 282/284? It's debated which is stronger. But what are typical failures for both Trans? 284 is by far stronger. Will hold much more power, and will shift much much smoother in high revs. Synchros are the worst part of both trans. 2nd gear synchro seems to go first. Other than that, any issue I wouldnt consider typical, unless your beating it to death. Then its only whatever decides to go first. *Issues with gear ratio with either Trans and either 3.8 or LQ1? Like I said, 284 shifts much smoother in high revs, and the LQ1, you can shift it at 7,000RPM's. Youll probably redline a 3.8 at 6,000RPM, and probably shift it around 5,500RPM. 282 has more gear compared to a 284. *what costs should I expect for either? Depends on the parts you use. Imcluding buying the trans and clutch for my car, Ive got probably 2K in my 5spd swap. *master cylinder less option available for both Trans? Master, and slave can still be bought new for both. Not an issue at all.
pshojo
So the guy selling 284 Trans with new clutch and flywheel and all accessories shifter ect for $750 plus shipping. I would sell the 282 with same assecories for $350-400. Could anyone here make me modded Trans mount?
Garrett Powered
I have wondered about which would handle more torque at lower rpms. does not seem to be any cut and dry proof. wheel hop probably usually is what breaks them. and one tire fire takes out the synchros I have heard. 19Cutlass94
I dunno. I wheel hopped mine so bad at the track once, through 1st gear, that I broke part of the dash, and my phone flew onto the back seat. Still shifted fine until the day I pulled it out. ( besides of the 2nd gear synchro gone, which was that way when I installed it ) and every time I popped the clutch in 1st, both tires spun. I think its mostly ppl that think they can drive a 5spd, and really cant that wear out the synchros.
Garrett Powered
I meant spider gears, I have no idea about synchros actually. I know I am not the best with a clutch either. I couldn't drive a stage 3 Spec and my 282 was shattered. well pretty much exploded. I don't know if it was me or someone tried to speed shift it at the track. also I don't know who wheel hopped it before I got the car. I did burnouts after I got the phantom grip LSD and it didn't wheel hop then.. but other times it has. not sure if I need struts now or what
RobertISaar
i imagine you could kill them spectacularly from swaps that don't have any kind of brace for the output shaft to the engine?
Miko K
My 282 has survived a 25PSI pull with the old twincharged setup. The transmission help up fine, the passenger side axle inner joint did not . Just to put the amount of power I had in perspective- in 3rd gear @50MPH it would smoke the tires until redline on a cool day and when it hooked, it was doing 50-80MPH in 2.7sec. I just about pooped myself every time it did that.
