3.1 95' Lumina
Hey guys, Ive got a 95' Lumina that had a thrust bearing thrown about a month ago. Car ran great until 2 or so weeks ago when the transmission started acting up. Coming home from Wilson, NC... my first gear would slip at about 4k while starting off and my overdrive would shudder when i was rolling and then gave it some gas. Long story short, im thinking about swapping transmissions just to make things easier. When I had the motor out to do the crank, i noticed that my car has th 4T60E transmission in it. But with the research ive been doing, seems there is a lot more to the transmission than just knowing the model. I was wondering if every transmission for a 3.1L Chevrolet Lumina would be the same, or do those even have differences in them?
RobertISaar
find any 94-95 3100 W-body 4T60E and it is a direct swap. anything beyond that will require some kind of changes, some are worse than others.
Breakdown
find any 94-95 3100 W-body 4T60E and it is a direct swap. anything beyond that will require some kind of changes, some are worse than others. From what I've heard. Cutlass-GP's are on their own in 94-95 and Lumina's are too, I don't remember why though. I think that all of those cars were OBD1.5, but not sure. I would NOT take a transmission from a 1994 Lumina since it had the LH0 and NOT the L82 engine in it and the mounting might be slightly different. With regards to swapping transmissions, I've been told: Match the chassis (W-body not Cavalier 3.1L) Match the engine 3.1L V6 in the '94 Lumina would be undesirable Match the OBD (on board computer) '93 down = OBDI '94-'95 = OBD1.5 '96+ = OBDII Sorry for muddying the waters. Something to also consider: We swapped a '96 powertrain into a '95 Grand Prix, and for that swap, you need the computer for the car in order to do this, but my philosophy is that if you're going to have an engine with 200K on it and newer tranny and you're going to do all of that work, why not just swap everything if you have the donor car, it all comes out together nicely anyhow. Crazy K
94-95 GP, CS, regal and 95 lumina, monte carlo with 3100 only is the proper direct swap. I think the 96+ 3100 gen 1 and gen 1.5 cars have a slightly different transmission that can also work, but are considered to be "different" because of some tweaks made within the transmission. They would hook up and fuction properly, pending a verification of the right wiring on the plug. Physically a 4t60e from anything could be bolted up, but might not function due to wiring difference or perceived gear ratio issues.
3.1 95' Lumina
Thanks for the quick replies. The reason im not going to do an entire drivetrain swap is due to the fact that ive already done new head gaskets, lower intake manifold gaskets, new crankshaft, timing set, seals, and other gaskets on the car. I know this motor is bulletproof and is going to be for a while, if i pull one from the junkyard im taking a crapshot at the reliability of the motor. And as for pulling the tranny, just get something from a similar car within the similar years? Like how the monte and the lumina are the same exact drivetrain wise, just get it in a 95? That should relieve a lot of confusion in the junkyard.
