ILoveSun
I am looking at purchasing a '93 - '95 and was wondering if there are any specific years to avoids, options to stay away from, ect? I saw a couple online that I REALLY liked........ White on white with a dark red/burgundy interior (couldn't really tell from the Picts) and White on red with white interior. Both had the rear buckets that I really loved. My budget will be no more than $5k, but I do NOT want a project car. I want something that I can just hop in and drive. Is this reasonable to expect? And finally, what type of aftermarket support is there for these cars (suspension, tuning, ect)? Thanks for your time. Greg
jake91
Being this is in the vert section I'd assume a vert
jake91
For verts 93-95 are pretty much mechanically the same. The 94+ cars have better brakes and air bags. 5k will get you a very nice vert. honestly I wouldn't pay over 3k unless it has less than 90,000 miles. Also don't forget about 92's they are the same as 93's. Differences between years 92 No airbags Older style brakes Quad buckets HUD optional Obd1 93 Same as 92 94 Drivers airbag Quad bucket seats HUD optional White interior available Obd 1.5 95 Better dash and interior Dual airbags White interior available No quad buckets No HUD Obd 1.5 Things to watch for when buying Check behind body cladding for rust, bubbling by the fuel door, and also the rear trailing arms. If its a 3.4 Dohc make sure to check the timing belt. they normally last 60-100k, and these are interference engines so you don't want it braking. That and the belt is pricey and difficult to replace. If its a 3x00 car check for oil in coolant, and coolant in oil. These engines suffer from bad lim gaskets. Also keep in mind the 3.4 dohc is harder to work. One of the biggest complaints is that the alternator is on the bottom of the engine and hell to replace, but otherwise it's not a bad engine. it just takes more mechanical ability for upkeep. Other than that the only other issues with these cars i can think of is I can almost guarantee you the CD player won't work lol. For Suspension mods Front options St springs for Monte Carlo Intrax springs (discontinued) Bxx coil over mounts Rear options Custom coil overs Flexaform or Birchmount rear leaf Engine mods For both 3.4/3X00 FFP dog ones (discontinued) FFP under drive pully (discontinued) Custom made CAI Obd 2 or Obd1 swap if 94-95 If 92-93 Obd 1 chip from wottech.com For 3.4 Dohc 96+ intake swap 6/-6 timing They take well to boost so custom turbo if ambitious For 3x00 3400/3500 top swap Cam TGP turbo setup Much easier to mod but still not many options. Or just 3800 swap it and open a whole world of awesomeness . Trans mods Shift kit 282/284 5 speed swap Exterior Lip spoiler and tails if 3x00 car Aweb rear wheel spacers (discontinued) Interior HUD if not equipped on 93-94 Drivers info center from earlier cutlass Bucket seat swap if 1995 That's all I can think of off hand Edited June 26, 2013 by jake91
ILoveSun
Jake, thanks for all of that info - VERY helpful! Yes, I do want a 'vert. One question though. You keep referring to a 3x00 car. What exactly does that mean? Thanks again, Greg
Garrett Powered
3x00 is the 3rd gen pushrod 60 degree. 3100 or 3400. TONS of mods available. you can boost it easier than a 3.4 and run it on obd1 8F bin files like the tgp uses. I have a 2005 impala 3400 in my 1988 GPSE for example. there is a cs144 alternator on it, try throwing one of those on any other V6 really... not too many options? must not be looking at wot-tech online catalog then... ILoveSun
Thanks - but I'm having a VERY hard time convincing the wife about a convertible(?). Getting all the "it's not safe, someone could cut the top" crap!
pshojo
Tell her a bike or convertible. See which one she prefers you to drive.
94 olds vert
The Cutlass convertible has a roll bar bring that up.
pshojo
95 Verts also has dual air bags, as well as ABS. Earlier models did also.
KarenL2888
and the roll bar is strictly decorative but dont let her read about that. Spoil sport.
