Interference?

Is a 95 LQ1 an interference engine? I had the timing belt redone and it died about 3 weeks later I took the timing belt cover off and the inside of the belt is gone. only about half the width of the belt is left.

'95 and earlier are NOT interference engines. '96-'97 ARE. However, I'd say if you recently had the belt redone, and half is missing, either the idlers and tensioner weren't replaced, and are bad, or something is severely misaligned. When my hydraulic actuator failed at 35,000 miles, the timing belt looked almost as good as it did when I installed it.

well thats great news! Well I had bought the \timing kit. which came with new idlers and tensioners. And they were installed. I saw it myself. But im still pissed about this!

If I was a betting man, I bet the metal bushing that goes in the through-hole in the tensioner was installed on the wrong side of the tensioner, which would have done two things: The tensioner would bind on the timing cover, creating insufficient tension...and, the tensioner itself would then be misaligned. The flanged side of the bushing goes between the tensioner and the timing cover--but it's easy, especially if you're unfamiliar/careless to assemble it backwards. Easy to tell, just look at the tensioner. If you see the flanged side of the bushing before you take things apart, under the retaining bolt, it's been installed backwards.

About the cheapest place I found to buy the timing kit was Rockauto. They had the Gates TCK-192 kit for around $115.00, which included the belt, idlers, and tensioner.

I did think of one other possibility...how much tension is on what's left of your belt? Are you sure the hydraulic actuator is good?

Hopefully, the description I gave for the tensioner makes some sense. Are you able to take it apart yourself, or are you taking it back to the mechanic that did the original work?

its still have STRONG tension on it. im thinking/hoping the idlers/tensioners were put on wrong

the 91-95 LQ1 has about .055" of clearance from what someone on the fiero forum has determined. no idea about how 96-97 measures though.

That's what small-claims court, and your state Attorney General is for.

No one is willing to work on the LQ1

When I had my cutty (and was in school), the only one I could find willing to work on it was the shift manager of the local meineke. He didn't do much of the actual mechanic work at the shop, but had his own LQ1 tools, and whenever I took my car in and would talk to him, he would do the work himself. He actually told me one time "yeah, it's an odd engine, but I'm not afraid of it", or something like that. I kinda miss that shop now that I'm back up here, but I have a guy that I trust here who isn't afraid of it either. FWIW it was a '94 and the tensioner pulley sheared while on the interstate going 70 or so MPH, and I had no valve damage

" No one is willing to work on the LQ1" Found this out myself when my first timing belt went. Went to the dealership to see if I could beg/borrow/steal the tools. Was told they no longer HAD the tools. I asked the service manager what they did when an LQ1 car came in the shop..... "Send them somewhere else" was his answer. I finally found the tools at a good price on Ebay.

I have figured out that my valve seal guides are bad, On start up i puff a little smoke.

However, when i drove it to Lansing this weekend and back, i burned up 2 1/2 quarts of oil. When I got home, the "low oil" light came on. It only has 48k miles on it. I'm not blowing smoke when driving. I might need to do some engine work. I've got to figure out where the oil is going.
