Nas Escobar
Well, after much fighting with this car over months to keep it alive, the alternator is finally gone. That means I can no longer drive the car... I've heard the horror stories about the alternator and I take it this isn't something that gets done in an hour, but since I have to go through so much, my question is.... is there any other GM alternator that fits the LQ1? I remember reading something once about a couple months ago about an alternator from the trucks would fit it, but I'm not 100% sure if that was even for the LQ1.... anyways I've used the search button to the best of my abilities and nothing good comes up for a how to or a good alt upgrade, so I get to ask.... has anyone used a corporate alternator on the LQ1 with success? and is there an official how to on here? I've heard that the axle for the pass. tire has to come out for the alternator to come out, and then there's that stubborn bolt that's hard to get. Sooo.... how do I tackle this? 55trucker
Follow the link....... This is a good upgrade for both the C130 & the C130D, they will hold up better to the heat off the rear exhaust manifold. It is an involved job to replace the alternator. Somewhat difficult, but time consuming. http://alternatorparts.com/cs130-cs130d-series-alternators.htm

There's no tab for the spring clip that retains the duct, and the new rear housing isn't shaped properly anyway. You want an upgraded alternator? The ONLY solution I know of is to install a CS130D in place of the CS130; and as far as I know, that requires a CS130D-style front timing cover/accessory plate from (I think) a '96--'97 LQ1. Well the thing is that IDK if I fried the alternator because it was old or because I had a lot of electronics hooked up. I have a Sony 1100 watt amp hooked up, a HID kit and some LEDs. I was hoping there was a way to upgrade so I can have more than 105amps. That's why I wanted to upgrade, but if it's too time involved (considering that the job itself is time consuming), then idk anymore... jman093
I say make it simple and just buy the regular alternator. My GTP had a supposedly upgraded higher output alternator. The lights would dim at idle or when bass hit with the stereo cranked up. I lived with that for years always assuming this was a fact of life with the underdrive pulley the car had. Until this "upgraded" alternator bit the dust anyways. After fretting around thinking I had to have a better alternator I ended up replacing it with a regular parts store reman just to get it back on the road. Thank God I did as it worked much better than the other one ever did. It was an aftermarket reman, but the case on it was at least factory as it was one of those newer cases with delphi stamped on it. I wouldn't waste a lot of time and money getting an alternative alternator that may or may fit as well, may or may not be more reliable, and may or may not have any more output. Garrett Powered
temp is what stops it from charging. the 130 has 1 internal and 1 pretty much useless external fan. 130D has dual internal fans and externally mounted regulator. bigger bearings and a host of other improvements. I know I say this all the time, but a capacitor relieves tons of stress from the alternator. also watch out for alternators with way too big upgraded stators and not small enough pulleys, combined with too little rpms at idle. it will kill your charge at idle and heat that SOB up quick. your battery will have chronic low charge. Nas Escobar
Well I've been tending to the Cutlass a bit too much to post on here, but I went ahead and just got a Tough One reman'ed alternator from Advance Auto parts with limited lifetime warranty. I hope it will be ok for a while. Are capacitors really worth it? I was always told it doesn't really do much but give the amp a burst of energy when bass hits, but not power it enough to keep my car out of the 12 volt range when idling... especially considering I like to listen to stuff like Yo Gotti, Juicy J, and other bass intensive songs. Garrett Powered
I can't even listen to a whole song before needing a charge without a capacitor. Dat Piff is the shit. I DL'ed Juicy, yo gotti, and all the wiz khalifa mixtapes already. WMP is not cooperating with me lately, but I should be ok. I tried a 3.5 farad boss cap plus a racing battery, and felt like I did wrong. going with 10 farad hybrid cap from RF in one car and see if it's better. keep an eye on my thread in the car audio section for details. I will be updating it soon.
bg35765
I've heard that the axle for the pass. tire has to come out for the alternator to come out, and then there's that stubborn bolt that's hard to get. Sooo.... how do I tackle this? I didn't have to remove the axle or the tie rod end. I had to twist it 100 ways to get it out, but it did come out. My best suggestion is to buy a full set of Gearwrench ratcheting wrenches with flexible heads. I did not have these at the time I changed the alternator, but they have become some of my favorite tools and have been well worth the investment. I bought this same set, but it was a Black Friday deal at Sears and was a lot cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-Flex-Head-Combination-Ratcheting-Wrench/dp/B0002NYD3U/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1372034540&sr=8-13&keywords=gearwrench+metric

I'm contemplating amplifying the speakers and adding a set on the doors for a 6 speaker set up.
Garrett Powered
so, nas... I saw that one before and wondered about it so here's unrelated stuff to this thread: just another example of windows media player causing me trouble; just now dl'd the real is back. ok somehow it was in there under untitled so no big deal, enter it in. fine now I go get the "real is back 2" which had some more songs and double platinum also, so I can't even find it under untitled. there is no rhyme or reason, it just does what it wants to do. lame. when I first was doing this they all went into WMP pretty effortlessly. then it all shows up great on my car stereo which is the only reason I use that damn program, and the fact it's free. it's being more confusing than itunes.. if that's even possible on a side note, I did get Problem-The Separation to show up in there so I will be sync'n two new albums to my memory stick before the ride to my game at 8. Garrett Powered
why I was using windows media at all I don't know??? I just used my computer and drug the file to the memory stick. tested in the car and looks good on the JVC. I grabbed Tyga Well Done 3 and put that on too. there is so much more I need to download it's insane.
Nas Escobar
I still use WMP but it's never given me issues.... I have yet to find a good player for win7. I feel the same way... there's a lot I need to download as well. I've been trying to catch up on my Brick Squad stuff. Never really liked Gucci Mane or OJ Da Juiceman but Waka Flocka, Frenchie, and Wooh The Kid are ok for when you don't want to listen to anything meaningful. Garrett Powered
Tyga's song switch lanes was slumpin! you could tell the other car would hit much lower than this. my cadence amp is just not capable of bass that low.
Nas Escobar
I felt the same way with my 10's.... I had 10's in my Cutlass and 12's in my Grand Am... needless to say one of the cars is sub less now.
