meltboy1
1990 TGP. I was having issues with the speedometer so I changed out the vehicle speed sensor thinking it was that and apparently I was wrong. The problem started out a while ago and it was sporadic where the speedometer would jump around a lot, more noticeable on the HUD than the analog. Then it got to the point where it would just either read 0, properly or jump around, then nothing. Now it only reads 0 on the HUD and the dash. I did notice the shaft that comes out of the transmission that goes into the VSS had a very very small section of the gear broken off the bottom. Very small like less than a quarter of an inch, so I don't think it's that. So I have a few questions. Am I looking for a broken wire somewhere? Is it in the gauge cluster? Is it in fact that shaft? Will it hurt anything to drive it reading 0? Like will the computer mess up anything? I can guess my speed enough and it's not like I tend to obey speed limits while driving it anyway. no1kicker
If your HUD is reading 0 also, it's probably not your cluster. I would look at the VSS again and make sure you installed it right, make sure the wiring connector is ok and on properly, and replace that gear you said is chipped. WIthout a VSS the odometer won't work also.
Hairdo12
I had that start to happen on my old lumina. It had the 4t60 with the older style sensor. The needle would jump around sporadically and then catch on. It was a broken wire near the plug for the speed sensor. I pulled on it slightly and it completely broke free. The coating on the wire remained the wire within was broke. I have no clue how it happened as it wasnt near y moving parts and looked like it stayed in the same spot for years. I just cut the plug off a jy car and spliced it on. Had to do it from underneath the car and was kind of a bitch... But it fixed the problem. i also had no torque converter lockup when wire was broke... Fyi
