Firen81
For anybody who doesn't remember me (probably everyone seeing as I'm such a silent member) I have a 1998 Lumina LTZ 3.8L. Its bone stock, but after about a year of being off the road, I am ordering parts galore to bring it back to life. Basically, the car is going to be brand new except a transmission rebuild (another question about that later) and an engine rebuild (doesn't need it after 293k km). Question one is they list 2 radiators for my car, a 5/8ths and a 1 inch. I do not know what I have and am wondering if I need to get out the old tape. Question two is lengthy, and I have researched it to death and just want one final "I think you got it" response, or "you're nuts". This is pertaining to the transmission. about 10k km ago, i noticed the transmission doing some odd things. It was Shifting quite hard out of park or Neutral. that seemed to go away, but then it started shifting hard from second to third. Me thinking "Oh sh*t", I went to have it checked, and it seemed to go away just as I pulled up to the shop. they didn't seem to notice anything. Later on, it seemed fine, until it was having issues shifting into third completely, then when it got to around 70km/h, it shifted like it was punching me in the back. After doing some reading...then some more....and more....it seemed to match the symptoms of a bad transmission pressure control solenoid, and a TSB seemed to back it up. I drove it like that for a while until it came off the road, and the fluid is a little burnt. Thoughts? Other than that, I'm going to post pictures of the process. I'm taking it to the local high school I graduated from (most likely) to do the work. Oh how I love lifts. Thanks in Advance!
RobertISaar
PCS seems like a good start. the early 4T65s weren't really an improvement over the late 4T60Es, they had some goofy issues pop up from time to time. i would start with a pan drop/filter change with some dex 6 fluid and have the transmission adapts reset, drive it around for a while, then if it keeps happening, do the PCS. as for the radiator, i'd grab the thicker one.... unless you're looking at a 3100 vs 3800 radiator, they should have the same hose and fitting locations. jman093
Are you sure it's a transmission shifting issue and not just trashed motor mounts?
Firen81
the computer was showing up a long shift code, and a harsh kick in the a**... motor mounts should be obvious, but I'll change mounts anyway....its all going to be apart. Scott205
I would check out gmpartsdirect.com before ordering from rockauto. Real GM parts vs sometimes cheap knock offs. and I bet you will find pricing very competitive, if not a a lot better than rockauto
Firen81
I looked, but I didn't see how they hand;ed shipping to Canada. Rockauto shipped Fedex, therefore no surprises. That said, i didn't order my suspension parts, might do that through gm parts direct if its reasonable.
