Looking for a sevice manual for my 89 cutlass supreme. Been told to stay away from Haynes and Chiltons. Need to tear top end down and replace gaskets. What do you all recommend? Thanks.

see if you can find a factory one, it's a wealth of information

Chilton would probably be fine, but the Haynes are worthless.

IMHO, anything other than the GM Dealer Service Manual is a joke.

I wouldn't change my washer fluid with those other "manuals". :) IMHO, the other manuals are for people that don't even know what a wheel is, and if it gets duct taped to the hood, or if they put it on the driver's seat as a booster - LMAO. :)

Go on ebay, get a REAL GM Dealer Service Manual. They are ~$25 to ~$30 for your car.

On ebay search for:

service manual 89 cutlass supreme

I actually like to have at least two service manuals. One I keep inside, and I don't it get grimy. I use the other manual when I work on my car, and I don't mind as much if it gets a little dirty. :)

IMHO, for the cost, and the benefit, to me it makes zero sense to do any "real" work on a car without a GM Dealer Service manual. For one thing, you get to see all of the BS, stupid, idiotic, and incorrect suggestions on the web on how to fix/do stuff on your car for what they are - BS.

Learn how to do things the correct way. Learn how some things (like ABS, air bags, etc) work. Then, you'll at least have a few chuckles when you read stuff on the web. :)

Good Luck!

I have a haynes manual since it came with my car. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one. Every once and a while it pulls through with some almost useful info.

And 1 factory manual will give you enough info to work on every w body. I have the 89 cutlass one and it works great combined with the tgp supplement

Got my e-bay manual yesterday. After flipping thru it was feeling a little over whelmed. I've never been that far into an engine before. Any advise?

Your original post said you were needing to get into the top of the engine to replace gaskets...could you be a little more concise on what needs replacing? There's a lot of experience here and we may be able to simplify things a bit.

The front head gasket was leaking out the side, so my bro in law suggested k-seal. Stopped the leak, but still is overheating, bubbling out the radiator. So is it safe to assume the head gasket is gone? Figured with 159k should do both and the intake gaskets Like I said I was a little overwhelmed with all the talk about messing with valves and such. Never did anything like that before. 89 cutlass supreme intl, 2.8

are you planning on keeping that 2.8? might be cheaper/easier to swap in a low mileage 3.1.

instead of doing head gaskets and stuff, you would be spending time on motor and tranny mounts, new hoses and wiring. stuff like that... that makes it worth doing.

of course you would be searching the forums for the best way to do an engine pull since the manual won't be giving suggestions necessarily.

get what the mechanics use, HELM publishers of factory manuals....they are not cheap. Haynes is not that bad, the factory manual is the best.
