tar6569 Posted April 7, 2013 Report Share Posted April 7, 2013 Scored a new molded GM oil pan gasket from the dealer, it had been sitting on the shelf for over 5 years and was covered in dust! Because of it sitting for so long, I got it for dealer cost! Anyway, I picked one up because I think oil my be seeping from my gasket. I've never changed out one of these gaskets while the engine was still in the car. It's a 95 GP GT with auto trans. I'm assuming there is no way to change the gasket without lifting up the engine? What's the easiest way to do this job? It's not a priority but I've been thinking about it so wanted to get some ideas. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Schurkey Posted April 7, 2013 Report Share Posted April 7, 2013 It's about ten times more likely that the oil you see at the pan gasket is actually leaking from somewhere above, and drooling down onto the gasket via gravity and wind. I'd be looking at these before I dropped the pan: Oil filter gasket Oil pressure sending unit The Dreaded Oil Pump Drive O-ring "valve cover" gaskets Cam-Carrier-to-head gaskets Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

That's what I had thought (coming from above) but I've had the intake gaskets done. Oil filter was dry last time I changed the oil. When I had the car jacked up today to do the front pads, I took another look and there was a small drop of oil hanging on the bottom of the pan. Car/engine has 91K miles. I'm going to check the oil pressure sending unit and see if anything is coming from there. Is the last location you listed viewable from above? mecury Posted May 11, 2013 Report Share Posted May 11, 2013 I just did my regal 2001, I have the regal repair manual which was little help but some key points. I found alot of help from youtube. I needed to lift the engine and remove the engine mount to get the pan out. how I lifted the engine was a support bar from harbor freight 80$ and also used my jack under the transmission pan with wood to protect the pan. and it was still A chore to get the pan out and the new one in. the pan gasket is this thick hard plastic that is hard to get in place because it takes up space to maneuver it in place. its doable but my saving grace is to have a second car to drive while I figure the mess out. youtube oilpan replacement and you can see if it relates to your car.
