Cold starts

Ok I have '93 Z34 with 82,000 miles that when you go to start in the morning it will not stay running. If you start it and keep the rpm's up around 2000 for about a minute it will idle just fine. And even after driving home from work one day it stalled when backing in the driveway. Its not a huge problem. But looking for ideas to look at. If I don't hold the rpm's up and just leave the gas pedal along it will start and die right away. The service engine light is on during this. But if I rev it up to 2000 rpm's for a bit and and let off the gas pedal it will idle just fine and the engine light will go off or will not go on at all. Would it be a bad EGR valve? Just looking for ideas I don't want to go and spend a fortune on this and that.

Check your idle air control valve, it's on the throttle body. If it's all black and gunky, clean both the valve and the hole it goes into with some throttle body cleaner. Could also be the throttle position sensor which would have to be replaced.

probably not EGR, since that gets tested on coastdown at relatively high speed.

figure out what the code is and you'll figure out what's causing the problem faster.
