Trans/Torque Converter Problem?

Hi guys, I'm new here so be nice haha. I found this site while looking up some symptoms for my 1992 Chevy Lumina Base. It's a 4 door with the 3100 engine.

Recently, my car has been acting a little (a lot, rather) strange. When idling at a stop in gear it will "shudder" or shake pretty bad. It goes away when in park or neutral. It also stop when I give it a little gas from go. It also shifts late if I keep my foot on the gas hard enough, probably around 30-40% down or more. If I don't take my foot off the gas, it will not shift. Also in second gear and third gear if I put my foot down too hard it will thud and then my engine will feel like it's working. It feels like it's lacking power if I don't do that. At around 45-55 mph it will vibrate pretty bad with the gas pushed in at cruise speed. If I take my foot off it will stop and if I put my foot down harder it will stop. This happens a little bit at 65-75 too.

Engine cranks fine, tranny shifts fine apart from what I said. No harsh shifts or anything. From what I've read and looked up, I believe it is the torque converter going bad. Any thoughts?

sounds like a torque converter/ converter clutch issue. I believe you can unplug the 4? pin plug on the front of the transmission and that should take the TQ lockup solenoid out of the mix. Lockup won't work like that but it should enable you to at least see if that is the problem.

I read that somewhere but I could not find the plug. Is there anything I have to remove to get at it?

No, it's down on the front of the trans next to the round modulator valve, you should see it when looking down past the filter box, Or you can follow the metal vacuum line down to the modulator. It is a square plug with rounded corners.

Alright, I'll try it out tomorrow. If my car goes back to normal, it's my torque converter? If not it's something else?

Not really the torque converter, but the lockup solenoid/clutch that is sticking on. If you are alright with slightly higher revs on the highway (and decreased fuel economy as a result) you could drive it indefinitely like that.
