l67ss
how come every one machines the flywheel for a 3.8 instead of using a spacer btween the block and tranny jus curious
carkhz316
Its probably because machining the flywheel down is cheaper and easier than trying to buy/ find a spacer to mate those two together.
l67ss
so its 4 ease of instalation not function kool thanks man
19Cutlass94
The only reason to machine a flywheel is if the surface is not good enough/clean enough to use with a new disc. There's no need to use spacers of any type. Sent from my iPhone in some random spot of Texas.
l67ss
i was told the offset of a rwd 3.8 f/w different than a fwd havent checked myself just planning ahead
GtpKo
Are you referring to why is it common to machine the 3800 F-body flywheel down to .84" for FWD 5-speed applications? The reason for that is clutch/bearing clearance differences between the 284 and T5. In other words, to make a non-standard application fit. Otherwise, the clutch may not engage/disengage fully or you may not get it to bolt together.
pshojo
Just buy one complete. Here is company friends of mine has used for flywheels for 3800 to 5spd and F40. Then its done and you don't have to worry about machining. http://specclutch.com/conversion_combos/view/9 http://specclutch.com/conversions
l67ss
so y not just use a spacer on the bellhousing like on a 5.3 rwd to early tranny should correct the offset

GtpKo
Milling the flywheel is simpler, easier, cheaper, and lighter. A shop might do it for say, $20?
pshojo
Anytime someone says "mill" I see $$. Maybe that is from being in manufacturing so long. I think I saw the flywheels were aluminum. Speaking of flywheels. Where have you all seen good places to get flywheel ? Being used to dodges, I could find aluminum flywheels easily. I'm looking for my 3,4 DOHC
19Cutlass94
I think spec makes flywheels for the 5spds. OEM GM flywheels can still be had but take some time to find Sent from my iPhone in some random spot of Texas.
pshojo
They seem to be somewhat available but all over the spectrum of $100-300, at least on Rock Auto. But sometimes I don't know if I completely trust rock auto.
19Cutlass94
Sometimes they are hit or miss. Which is why I only buy the close out deals so when it is wrong, they just refund my money. Haha Sent from my iPhone in some random spot of Texas.
