removing UIM and getting at oil leak

is said is either an o-ring on the oil pump shaft or a gasket issue. How big a job is it to remove the UIM and what else do you have to remove to at least locate the exact problem?

Theres been like 5 threads about this just on the first page man.. Try searching.

What motor are we working on? Its an easy job. Remove coilpacks, remove UIM, Youll have to remove the coolant line going into the LIM by the thermostat, then take off the 15mm bolt on the hold down, and take it out, then put it back together.

Just did this on 12/21/2012 waiting to laugh at the doomdayers:lol:

a good indicator is oil running down the front and back of your engine

1.drain coolant and relieve fuel pressure, dis connect battery if prefered

2. remove air intake and throttle body, disconnect sensors and vacuum lines, label if you wish but everything only plugs into where it camefrom except spark plug wires which you will leave alone and connected. MAP or MAF sensor between plenum and coil packs needs to come out to.

3. EGR needs to come off to, i just unbolt it but you might have to disconnect it as well,(set aside your gonna take this apart and clean it out good if you care about your car)

4. I start with the UIM at the alternator side and work my way in an X pattern removing the bolts, All should be 10mm except the two closet to the Alt which are 1/2"

(careful now this is where you get crap in your engine and the pressure washing of the engine beforehand will help reduce this.) Once bolts are out it my be stuck on, wood blck tapped with hammer under thottle body area will loosen it. Set this aside you need to clean this out with something to.

Now you should be at least able to see the distributor cap just behind the thermostat housing underneath were the Thr. body was. But(if 3100) you`ll see that two of the fuel lines are in the way and the fitting leading out of the thermo housing is in the way.

5. so you need to get the fuel injectors out of the LIM, two bolts on the rail come out and carefully pull the whole assembly out, you also need to replace the orings(black on the injectors, come 4 to pack and you need 6, also careful not to let to much junk fall into the fuel injector openings.

6. now with an adjustable wrench(or 23-25mm):D start at that fitting on the thermo housing but only unthread it enough so you can get the bolt holding the dist. cap bracket down. once that bolt is out and the bracket off you need a pair of pliers vice grips etc to grab the edge of that cap and sort of twist when you pull up and it should come out. everything is pretty much the reversal from here, good time for a beer run or smoke break if you like. RTV the shit out of the cap after you get the new oring on, not on the gears but at the top to make a seal. The thing doesnt really like to go on easy so you kindof have to play with it but on the bottom you1ll see a hex and it has to line up with something back inside the engine.

Replace all gaskets on your way TB, EGRx2, UIMx2, good time to get at the thermostat and flush cooling system.

Dont think i left anything out, ask if you need to, its is an easy job compared to other things if youve got a little exp.

A pic of the Distributor plug provided by another thread. Regardless of engine and year i believe they all look the same.

NO NO NO i am NOT taking any credit for any kind of write up, i am simply repeating like a parrot what 19Cutlass94, 94Vert, Schurkey, and GOT2bGM(and others) told me. And im still probably leaving something out, but i`ll help you guys out getting that damn thing sealed up, I owe GM a swift kick to the junk for that one:thumbsup:

BUT keep in mind this applies mainly to a 3100, Lq1`s(3.4 DOHC) require something else but the older 3.1`s and newer 3400 this should apply to closely.

When it came time to mess with the coolant fitting i had to walk about 20mi round trip to get a damn wrench, my set only went up to 19mm:lol: I can laugh at it now and had to start my own thread to ask what size.(Shit Happens)
