OldsCrazy
It is a 95 Cutlass with a 3.4 DOHC. I just changed the intake manifold gasket and reassembled it starts and idles a little rough but you can smell the gas coming out of the exhaust. Once in gear it runs really rough. I have replaced the intake gasket before without a problem. I checked all wiring and connections, all look good. All vacuum lines, plug wires look good, I have a leak and did run the car without the mass air sensor for a couple of minutes to find the water leak. The plastic line between the outside of the plentum that runs to the fuel regulator broke and I repaired it with a rubber line. Not sure if that would cause this problem. Does anyone have any ideas???? I am out of them>>>>> Edited December 31, 2012 by OldsCrazy
Galaxie500XL
Sounds crazy, but check the EGR gasket...I'm assuming you bought a new one? EGR leak at either the EGR gasket, or the EGR tube will cause a massive vacuum leak. Most likely, the mixture is excessively lean, causing misfire, which would cause the fuel smell at the exhaust...unburned fuel. I actually did this myself my first intake gasket replacement. virtuetovice
The easiest way to rule out a vacuum leak would be to spray something like starter fluid around the engine and see if the engine surges when doing so. BE CAREFUL! Wait until the engine is cold for obvious reasons. Make sure your spark plug wires don't have any frays.
OldsCrazy
I checked the EGR gasket and it was good but it jogged my memory that I had some acorns around it when I took it a part, I did sweep it out before I put it together but one may have gotten lodged. I look the plentum off and blew it out to make sure it is clear and then I replaced the fuel injector plastic vacuum line that runs along the intake and out to the plentum. Not sure which one fixed the problem but I am golden now. Now it I just find the guy that hit me and ran I would be better. Thanks to all for your help. Oldscrazy ! ! !
