getrag 284
hi all; did a search but didn't get useful descriptions etc; I have my block mostly stripped and want to remove the crank gear and connecting mesh chain and intermediate shaft gear. I can't get the mesh chain off to get at just the gear. So what special tool do I have to use to get this off? Is there a Kent Moore number or something like that? Am I missing something about this; is there a trick? any input appreciated; thanks. GP
Galaxie500XL
See if this helps... [TABLE=class: table] [TR] [TD]INTERMEDIATE SHAFT BELT SPROCKET AND OIL SEAL REMOVAL Verify relationship of intermediate sprocket to front cover. Raise and support vehicle. Remove starter motor and install flywheel holding tool No. J-37096, or equivalent. Lower vehicle. Rotate engine and position to factory alignment marks. Remove sprocket bolt and washer. Mark position of sprocket on nose end of intermediate shaft. Remove secondary timing belt. Reverse center bolt and engage self-tapping screws of sprocket remover tool No. J-38616, or equivalent, into three equally spaced holes on belt sprocket and remove intermediate shaft timing belt sprocket. Remove intermediate shaft belt sprocket oil seal. INSTALLATION Install oil seal using seal installer tool No. J-38619, or equivalent. Lubricate seal surfaces of intermediate shaft sprocket. Align timing marks and install sprocket into position engaging locating tangs of sprocket into mating sockets of chain sprocket. Verify engagement by measuring from face of belt sprocket to front cover. If measurement is more than 1.65 inches, tangs are not engaged. Install O-ring in position on end of intermediate shaft. Lightly lubricate threads of sprocket bolt and tighten bolt to specifications. Raise and support vehicle. Remove flywheel holding tool and install starter assembly. Lower vehicle and install secondary timing belt and covers. Galaxie500XL
Would have helped if I had identified the right procedure...try this one! SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED (or equivalents) J-8433, Universal puller bridge. J-38611, Special legs and protector. J-38612, Crankshaft gear installer. REMOVE OR DISCONNECT Front cover, refer to Timing Cover / Service and Repair . Mark position of crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets to timing chain. Retract timing chain tensioner, refer to Timing Chain Tensioner / Service and Repair . Timing chain tensioner bolts. Raise vehicle and suitably support. Timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and intermediate shaft sprocket as an assembly, using J-8433 and J-38611 on crankshaft sprocket. NOTE: If intermediate gear does not slide off easily with timing chain, rotate the crankshaft back and forth to help loosen the tight fit. Timing chain tensioner. Inspect crankshaft alignment key for burrs or marks that could effect assembly. INSTALL OR CONNECT Make sure crankshaft key is installed and fully seated and chain tensioner installed and blade retracted. Slip both sprockets and chain over proper shaft and engage slot in key. Intermediate shaft may move against rear cover. Slide sprocket and chain on shafts maintaining parallel alignment of sprockets. Make sure rubber and tension blade of tensioner does not become caught, misaligned or dislodged. Larger chamfer and counterbore of crankshaft sprocket are installed toward the crankshaft. The intermediate sprocket spline sockets are installed away from the case. The crankshaft sprocket must be pressed on for the final 8 mm (0.31 inch) to seated position using J-38612. Verily timing is maintained. Pull retaining pin from tensioner. Front cover.
