Petes93cutlass
I'm just about to install the engine back into my Cutlass. Since it's a 1994 3.4 DOHC engine, I couldn't use my 1993 alternator. Therefore, I bought a new alternator for the engine. The wire connector that plugs into the alternator from my 93 is different from the 94 alternator I purchased. Therefore, I have to splice in the 1994 connector to my wiring harness. The question is my 1993 has two solid brown wires and the 1994 has a brown wire and a brown/yellow stripe wire. The 94 has the letters P & D while my 1993 plug has L & F. so which wire connects to which one. I guess i can just match the two connectors together and splice them together. For example: Laying both connectors side by side and connect the first wire of my 93 to the first wire of the 94. Again the problem is that my factory wiring harness has 2 identical brown colored wires. And I remember someone saying that if I crossed them up I would fry the alternator and thats the last thing I want to do is to replace the alternator once the engine is installed
crazyd
We're just discussing this in my other alternator thread. I did this five years ago and documented what you need to do here: http://blogs.dohcfiero.com/?p=18 I just matched up the brown wires the way you mentioned. Petes93cutlass
So your saying that I have to connect a wire to the "S" port and connect it to the alt battery. Then I have to find which brown wire has 12 volts when I turn the key on and connect that wire to the FI port. Now, I have a voltage gauge. Do I use the other brown wire then or not
RobertISaar
CS130 pins: S (external voltage sensing) F (field power) L (alternator light output) P (tach) the CS130D has these pins as well, though they may not be labeled as such. with a 93 CS 3.4, you can pull the "IGN" fuse from the right-side electrical center and use a multimeter and you'll get 0 ohms of resistance from one of the alt wires to one of the terminals that removing the fuse exposes. that is the F circuit. on the 94-95 cars, the solid brown wire is the F circuit. Petes93cutlass
So do i need to install a s wire or just use the 2 brown brown wires and thats it
RobertISaar
S is not required. if it's not hooked up, the regulator gets it's voltage signal internally.
Petes93cutlass
Well that was easy. I just noticed my alternator from my 93 had the letters on it enabling me to identify which wire was what and just matched it up the letters with the 94 wiring.
