3100 performance rebuild

slick

Recommended Posts

Yeah yeah yeah. I kinda stole the title off another topic, oh well. Any ways, when mine craps out (its at 133,xxx right now), i plan on putting a built up 3100 in there. Laugh all you want aaron, it will run good. Ok, so heres a list of stuff i plan on doing:

My set of headers im making right now

Newer 3100 intake manifolds, gasket matched

5 angle valve job done on the heads

Bored .030 over(i'd like to run 9:1 compression, you will see why down the list)

Larger TB

Have a cam made

Centrifugal Supercharger

So, i need ideas about the pistons, springs, connecting rods, and all that jazz.

A s/c with 9:1! I could be wrong but isn't that high compresion w/ a s/c. You might have to run with very high octane gas to keep detonation down.

The 3800 s/c run 8.5:1.

No, it can be done with 9.1 CR. It all depends on the heads and cam. The 3100 heads are much better than 3.1L heads and should be able to hold some decent boost, properly tuned of course

Well, for springs, stock ones are fine unless you get some lifts over .500". Pistons and rods are good for around 300Hp, think. If you want 9.1 CR, just take some material out of the combustion chambers. Not only with it lower your CR, but if you do it right, make the heads hold the boost better

What is the bore size on my 3100 anyways? Would i have to get custom piston's made, or are there some available that would fit? What type of pistons should i get, like theres flat topped, there are ones that have a bowl type shape, etc... Is there really anything i can do for the crank, or is the stock gonna handle the power fine?

Your stock bore is 89mm, the 3400 bore is 92mm. Your stock crank should hold up just fine. As for pistons, going with flat tops will give you a rediculously high CR. Get some dished ones where the dish volume is about 1/2 what it is now

Guest Gp crazy

 $$$$ there are many types and they very in price  and diffrent dish sizes (the top of pistion with a pocket in) 8) the price for mine was 350$. the cam i am usenig has a max gross lift of .444 it was 167$ with lifters. with block decking and reworking heads and the gaskets it was around 1400$ i though it was a lot but i seen people spend a lot more 8)

Yeah,i know its a few bucks. Ok, heres more stuff added to my list. If you feel that some things wouldn't benefit me, or if you know of something better say so:

Lifter springs(need recomendations)

Rocker arms (recomendations)

Pushrods(again)

Hi-flow fuel pump(again)

injectors

fuel filter

oil pump(should i?)

fuel pressure regulator(again)

180 thermostat

As for pistons, I don't think you'd need to order custom pistons. When I ordered parts for an engine I rebuilt two summers ago, they asked for the type of engine, and then if it was bored over. As long as you stick to "stock" over-bores (.01, .02, .03, etc) they should have pistons for you. I think. They did for me :) (btw, mine was .03 over)

As long as your total valve lift is less than .500" you dont need springs, stock pushrods are fine, stock rockers are fine, unless you want a higher ratio, and then you're out of luck, unless you want to mess with the guideplates. Everything else is probably a good idea. Oh, Brother Pig, he doesnt want stock pistons, b/c then he will not get the desired compression ratio, although you could run decent boost with stock CR

Brother pig, where did you order your pistons from? How much were they?

Robby, if i can get a cam regrind, do you think that the total valve lift will be over .500? I highly doubt i have a cam regrind done though, unless i will notice the benefits.

A cam regrind will not yield total valve lifts over .500 It will change the durations and maybe add some lift. I think its worth it, the durations help out a lot. Either Comp Cams or Crane Cams is currently working on a cam for 3x00s. Wait til it gets done, and see what it looks like
