JTalley
Whenever I'd start the car, the idle would be a little rough. that black thing would click, then put out a bit of smoke, and the idle would smooth out. I had to push the car home yesterday because it wouldn't start. Now, IF it starts, it runs terrible and that black thing constantly puts out smoke. What is it and how do I fix it? Btw, the smoke isn't coming from the gasket, it's coming from the part itself.
Galaxie500XL
It's the EGR. Or, more properly, as GM called it the DIGITAL EGR. Expensive to replace new...junkyard is the best bet.
94 olds vert
There is a very good write up someone did (fehl) on how to clean these. Search the forums and I bet you will find it.
AL
Fehls write-up is on the 3100, this is a 3.1 and he cleaned the intake where it clogs
RobertISaar
it's actually easier to clean the 3.1 intake, since all of the carbon tends to pack into a little tube. sounds like one of the valves is stuck open. i'd pull it off, poke around in it to get everything moving again and stick it back on. that should at least allow you to be driveable again. JTalley
I pulled it off, cleaned it up a bit and put it back on... Same symptoms. I did get it to stay running for a bit and found what's wrong with it- there is a vacuum leak somewhere. I can't see it- none of the lines seem to be messed up, but I can hear it somewhere on the lower part of the engine (maybe even the trans?). I can hear it loudest on the passenger side, it's a very loud hiss like one of the lines is popped off completely. I'm certain it's responsible for some other vacuum related issues I've been having; no heater vent controls, etc. On my Astro, there was a canister on the passenger side, and I had to replace the vacuum hose to that to fix my vents, but I don't see the canister on this car. Does anyone have some diagrams or pictures?
z34dumas
the canister is in the rear wheel well on my z
RobertISaar
that's the carbon cannister. vacuum cannister is in the front, probably in the driver's side fender/bumper area, that's where it's placed on the 1.5Ws.
dodgethis
I was going to point out on the egr. Be careful when your hooking up the electrical connection on. When i had the ciera, Some how or another I had bent the EGR electrical pins when I hooked it back up. So in essence 2 out of the 3 pins were hooked up. z34dumas
oh yeah i just remember reading something about a canister in the manual. what exactly does the carbon canister do?
RobertISaar
gasoline that evaporates in the tank gets filtered through it and then burned in the engine. controlled by the CCP solenoid.
JTalley
Just to test it, I took a thin piece of metal that would cover all the holes between the EGR and intake, drilled some bolt holes over it and put it on in place of the EGR. Running a lot better now, so I ordered a new EGR. Hopefully this will fix my driveablility issues.
