white96supreme
I've had this small oil leak for a few months, but couldn't pin point the source. I did the uim/lim gaskets 2 yrs ago, replaced the oil pump drive o-ring a few weeks later. That stopped the leak at the rear of the engine and everything stayed dry until recently. I degreased the engine the other night and added oil dye to the engine oil. Drove it about 60 miles and rechecked using my uv light, found dye at the front of the lim where the bead of silicone is, fml!!!! I haven't checked the oil pan gasket yet, but suspect that its ok. Do you think I could get away with getting the manifold and egr gaskets instead of getting the whole felpro manifold gasket kit? I did buy the rocker arm tool from Matco so it should speed up the repair when I do it.
95 vert
I've done them without buying the whole gasket kit. Obviously, make sure you don't damage the other gaskets during repair.
white96supreme
I guess the main ones I'm worried about is the valve cover gaskets re-sealing. I am going to use Ultra Gray rtv to seal up the ends of the manifolds. Always had good luck with it holding up when sealing power dividers and rear ends on semi trucks. An engine swap is looking mighty tempting at this point, but it still runs very well with 139k. I'm sure there isn't much to do to the intakes in the power dept while its apart. dodgethis
Hey man can you do a write up on it, i have the 3100, and she is leaking oil bad, and also I believe radiator fluid is bein consumed again. I had her UIM replaced around 50,000 miles, and now has 140 miles now.
white96supreme
I will try to document with pictures and captions (if it hasn't been done yet) when I do it. It will probably get done next weekend as long as nothing comes up. May even put some paint on the valve covers and UIM, thinking either red or black with the "3100" staying natural aluminum. I'm going to clean out the egr passage while its off and possibly do the coolant bypass for the TB.
rich_e777
Valve cover gaskets as long as installed right shouldn`t have issues, if you have the black plastic like covers(on 3100) get some metal ones ASAP. The black ones always develop cracks around the bolts on the 3100. Metal ones bolt right up and remember the splash shield under the PCV ducts to keep oil out of the UIM. First mod/repair i did on my car 7-8 years ago. Do note the quality of the rubber gaskets/seals around scrap yard find valve cover bolt inserts, they do wear out and i havent found a replacement or had the need to yet. A wire bush on a rotary tool makes both the UIM/Plenum and valve covers look shiny and once clean will help very slightly torward heat dissapation. white96supreme
I got it done yesterday and I can safely say that I hope I NEVER have to do that again. Didn't get too many pictures though. It was 1 step forward and 3 steps back when re-assembling everything. I swear, it's like a damn puzzle!!! I did the TB coolant bypass mod. The egr port was partially plugged so that got cleaned and the UIM got a good steam cleaning. The UIM and valve covers got painted gloss black with the "3100 SFI V6" in red. j_mezz
What's the TB coolant bypas mod? Did you, by any chance, replace the lifters? I'm in the middle if doing the LIM's in my car and there's 2 lifters (so far) that aren't working as smoothly as the rest after cleaning them all out - looking for a cheaper alternative to buying a new set. Never done this before so...it's an interesting experience! It really is a 3-d jigsaw puzzle!
white96supreme
The TB coolant bypass keeps hot coolant from running through the throttle body. Not sure if all w's have the coolant running through it but mine did. I did not replace the lifters, however, I did check the cam lobes and didn't find any signs of wear.
